  2. Couple 'have lucky escape' as fire hits housepublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

    A Warwickshire couple had "a lucky escape" this morning, the fire service says, as a blaze destroyed the upstairs of their home.

    Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, external was called to Brunel Close, Whitnash, at about 03:40.

    The residents managed to get out of the house before the blaze took hold. 

    Incident commander for the fire service Declan Patterson said: "Unfortunately there were no working smoke alarms in the property. Luckily the male resident did wake up to see the fire."

    It was believed the blaze started in an airing cupboard on the first floor, the fire service said.

    Today the Prime Minister (pictured below) made a rallying call to create 300,000 new jobs here in the Midlands.

    As the Conservative Party conference came to a close, the online retail giant Amazon announced it was hiring on a huge scale in the run-up to Christmas. 

    Also on the programme, a girl aged just five has criticised the Prime Minister for not doing enough to help homeless people. 

    Brooke Blair says she was inspired to send a message to Theresa May after seeing people sleeping rough on the streets of her home town of Coventry.

    Residents who weren't told for three weeks why theor bins haven't been emptied have been given an apology by Coventry City Council, external.

    Pamela Edgson, who lives in Hasilwood Square in Stoke Green, had been putting her bins out on time, but they weren't being emptied. 

    She called BBC Coventry & Warwickshire after running out of space to put any rubbish.

    The council says a special small bin lorry it has to use in Hasilwood Square had broken down and it forgot to tell anyone.

    Four station signs are to be turned gold in honour of successful British Paralympians, London Midland has announced, external.

    - Kidderminster: Claire Cashmore, gold medalist in women's 4x100m medley relay

    - Stratford-upon-Avon: Cyclist Megan Giglia, winner of the women's C1-2-3 3,000m individual pursuit

    - Northampton: Ellie Robinson, who won gold in women's 50m butterfly

    Gold boards have already been put up at the stations in Sutton Coldfield, in honour of cyclist Jon-Allan Butterworth and Hemel Hempstead, for Olympian Max Whitlock and Paralympic archer Jessica Stretton.

    It comes after Diane James' decision to step down from the top job last night, after only 18 days in charge.

    Nigel Farage is to lead the party until a fresh contest is completed. The UKIP North West MEP Steven Woolfe has said he will stand, external for the leadership.

  9. Appeal after fatal collisionpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

    Police want to speak to a tractor driver after a fatal collision on the Banbury Road between Southam and Ladbroke.

    The collision happened on 7 August at about 18:50 and the rider of a grey Honda motorbike, a man in his 60s, died at the scene.

    Warwickshire Police, external has released a photo of a tractor (pictured above).

    The force said the driver "may have vital information regarding the circumstances leading up to the incident".

    New jobs are coming to Leamington Spa as furniture maker Vitsoe - which has branches in London, New York and Tokyo - begins construction work on its new headquarters today.

    The firm is moving from London because it say it's too expensive to rent a building there. 

    New roles will also be created, although it's not yet known exactly how many.

    Managing director Mark Adams told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire the move is also partly because their supply chain has moved to the Midlands.

    North Warwickshire NHS is one of 24 clinical commissioning groups to have been told it has the "greatest need for improvement" by new Ofsted style cancer ratings , externalpublished by NHS England. 

    Only 71.6% of people were treated within 62 days of referral - that's below the expected operational standard of 85%. 

    Warwickshire North CCG says it is "already taking forward actions to improve cancer outcomes for patients" and that these would be treated as "specific priorities" over the next two years.

    A rare Roman artefact found in Warwickshire was being used as a bird bath before its true value was realised.

    The mortarium - a kind of mixing bowl used to grind herbs and spices for food - dates from around the 2nd or 3rd Century AD, and was donated by Alcester resident Ray Taylor to Warwickshire County Council.

    It's thought the bowl could have been made at Mancetter, which was an important producer of mortaria at the time.

    The item is now on display at the Roman Alcester Heritage Museum.
