  1. Twycross Zoo teaching elephants to walk into transport crates published at 12:27 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2017

    Earlier on in the week we told you about Twycross Zoo moving their Asian elephants elsewhere.

    Twycross will now begin a year-long training programme to teach the herd to walk into a transport crate.

    It's hoped they will breed and ensure the survival of the species.

    Today I caught up with the zoo's director of life sciences, Dr Charlotte Macdonald.

    She said: "They are very attractive animals - because we have two females of reproductive age, plus a young female calf who will then become a breeder in the future.

    "I think actually a few zoos will want to take them".

    Hurdler Andrew Pozzi will go for gold at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Belgrade today.

    Pozzi, from Stratford-upon-Avon, is favourite to lift the 60m title having set the three fastest times in the world so far this year. 

    The 24-year-old has been hampered by injury in his attempt to win medals at previous championships.

    Wasps centre Kyle Eastmond will miss the rest of the Premiership season after tearing an Achilles tendon on Sunday.

    Eastmond will be out for six months after having surgery on the injury, which he suffered in the first half of the win over Gloucester on 26 February.

    The 27-year-old made 16 appearances for Premiership leaders Wasps this season, scoring two tries.

    A three-month trial allowing holders to renew their Blue Badges online, external  begins in Warwickshire today.

    About 750 people taking part will be asked to prove their identity and eligibility using  a new government verification tool., external

    The team behind the project says it's the first time a local authority will be able to access central government data to carry out real-time checks.

  7. West Midlands mayor's salary to be agreed - will it be £79k a year? published at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2017

    Council leaders in the West Midlands will be asked to agree a salary of £79,000 a year for the region's first elected mayor.

    Voters in Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Solihull will elect a Metro Mayor on 4 May. 

    An independent panel has suggested the winner should be paid around £4,000 more than an MP.

  13. Coventry City announces £600k profit after selling playerspublished at 17:09 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2017

    Coventry City Football Club has published accounts showing a profit of £600,000 in the year up to May 2016. 

    The club says the profit, external is due to the sale of players, otherwise the business would have led to an operating loss of about £1.9m. 

    The team are currently facing the prospect of relegation to League Two, which the club says will have a "material impact on revenues".

    The football club is satisfied with the positive nature of the financial results. However, we are extremely concerned to be in the relegation zone at this point in the season. Irrespective of the size of the task ahead, League One status is the priority focus for the club.

    It might not be the end of the line for the speedway team Coventry Bees, as representatives look into ways of saving the club. , external

    Last week the club was told by the British Speedway Promoters' Association that it would not be allowed to race in 2017.

    The Bees were due to ride in the Premiership, the top flight of British speedway, but have been unable to agree a deal to stay at their Brandon home.
