    Shops are being boarded-up and schools are closing in the town of Atherstone ahead of the annual ball game.

    It's one of three yearly Shrovetide football matches that have been played for hundreds of years.

    Coventry Bees rider Danny King admits it will be difficult to find alternative clubs after the Bees were expelled from speedway's Elite League.

    The Bees have had their licence withdrawn just before the start of the season over concerns that they wouldn't be able to complete the campaign, and King says it's a big blow for the Bees line-up.

  8. Leeroy Bailey trial: Jury hears vulnerable teenager 'had reaction to alcohol' published at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    A jury at Warwick Crown Court heard the prosecution claim Leeroy Bailey had "supplied" a vulnerable teenager with alcohol, allowing a situation where there was "significant potential" for the boy to have ended up with "alcohol poisoning".

    Opening the case against Bailey, Jonathan Eley, said the "victim was not used to drinking, and had a reaction".

    The prosecutor added: "The teenager would not know what his limits were, would not know how strong alcohol - like vodka - was and could easily overdose on alcohol that evening whilst in the care and responsibility of Leeroy Bailey."

    Bailey denies a charge of child neglect and the trial is expected to last two days.

    Michelin star chef Glynn Purnell may have helped put Birmingham on the culinary map but those areas covered by a West Midlands elected mayor - and the fact there is an election at all - seem to be far less clear to voters.

    He has been quizzing commuters about what they know of the vote for the person to run a newly created combined authority - or "super council".

    He found people who were "in the dark" about the process in May, saying: "No one seemed to have a clue about the election or the fact that we're getting an elected mayor."

  10. Delia Derbyshire's music to be celebrated in city 'Deliaphonic' event published at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    The work of pioneering electronic musician Delia Derbyshire is to be celebrated in the city on what would have been her 80th birthday.

    Coventry Cathedral will host the event on May 5, external , including guest appearances from Dr Peter Zinovieff who engineered early synthesisers, and Pete Kember - the artist known as Sonic Boom - who was one of the last to work with the artist.

    Founding member of the Specials, Jerry Dammers, will play at DJ set and Circle of Light, a colour film shot in 1972, to which Delia scored the soundtrack, will also be screened.

    Event organiser Sarah Morgan is also asking for anyone with information, photos or documentation of her life in Coventry to come forward to "help build a better picture of her time here".

  11. Man found with head injuries in country lane could have been 'dumped' published at 16:59 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    A man was found with serious head injuries lying in the road near Henley-in-Arden after a suspected assault, say police.

    The 21-year-old from Coventry was found by a member of the public at around 18:05 yesterday near to Elmhurst Farm on Wawensmere Road, Wootton Wawen, and was taken to hospital.

    Det Insp Jon Belcher said the force is "keeping an open mind" in their investigations but are "considering the man being assaulted elsewhere before being dumped" in Wootton Wawen.

    Drivers are being warned to expect tricky conditions during rush hour tomorrow morning by the Met Office, with icy weather set to last into Tuesday.

    Forecasters say temperatures could dip below freezing point and there could be snow over hills.

    Jeff Davies, the official photographer for the Coventry Bees for the past 33 years,  say's he's "absolutely devastated" at the news the team won't race this year.

    "For the country to lose it's most iconic club is shocking" he said.

    The club, which first started in 1928,  will not be allowed to race in 2017, the British Speedway Promoters' Association has announced.

    London Midland , external say travellers to and from Kidderminster are being affected by a faulty train. 

    The 16:23 Kidderminster to Stratford-Upon-Avon will be started from Birmingham Snow Hill instead, and the 15:09 Dorridge to Kidderminster was terminated at Birmingham Snow Hill.

    A car driver had to be freed by crews after suffering a tyre blow-out and ending up on the embankment of the M40, says Warwickshire service.

    There was no serious injures as a result of the crash yesterday between junctions 12 and 11.

  16. Tens of thousands of people carrying expired driving licences published at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    Thousands of people are carrying driving licences that have expired.

    A BBC investigation found 180,892 in the West Midlands are carrying the out of date cards.

    Photo card licences need to be updated every 10 years, at a cost, but it seems many people in our region are not aware of that.

    It means people across the West Midlands could collectively owe £180m in fines - £1,000 per licence out of date.

    You could also face an extra fine of £1,000 if the address on your licence is not correct – although in reality, very few people are prosecuted.
