Kumar Sangakkara joined Stoneman just before tea and Surrey will look to push on during the final session. Warwickshire may still wish they had given themselves the chance to bat first.

The record attendance at a County Championship match at Edgbaston is 28,000 against Lancashire in the championship-winning season of 1951

Despite playing in Birmingham, the links with Warwickshire go way back to the club's foundation in Leamington Spa in 1882.

According to the ground's website,, external  Warwickshire had considered Rugby and Leamington Spa for their headquarters but then club secretary William Ansell believed that Birmigham's large population and rail connections made a city-base more preferable.

The Birmingham links don't always go down well with the fans however, with many of them unhappy with the decision, in 2013, to change the name of their  T20 side to the Birmingham Bears

And now details of a new city-based T20 competition have been revealed, which could stretch county links even further.

    Surrey 133-0 v Warwickshire - Lunch

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

Surrey will be delighted with the opening session of 2017...Warwickshire will wonder whether they should have asked for the coin to go up.

Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman have played immaculately. Both have played some handsome shots on either side of the wicket and have taken full advantage of the conditions.

Stoneman was the first to fifty, quickly followed by Burns but Ian Bell must be worried. Neither batsman has looked in too much difficulty and Warwickshire will be hoping something happens after the lunch break or this could be a very long opening day of the season for them.

He said he'd conquered the nerves he suffered last year, when he couldn't "settle down".

American Charley Hoffman defied tricky blustery conditions to take a four-shot lead after day one.
