  1. Glenridding Bridge to be assessed laterpublished at 10:12

    An engineer will assess Glenridding Bridge later after it was closed to all traffic following last night's further flooding.

    Cumbria Highways said it had prioritised the assessment of the bridge given its importance for access to and from the village.

    At first light military personnel made an initial assessment and the Cumbria County Council said it aims to have a fully qualified bridge engineer on site later today.

    People in the areas of Kendal severely flooded at the weekend need more support to get the help they need, according to a local clergyman.

    Some of the town's oldest streets, like Ann Street (pictured), and the large Sandylands estate, saw up to 4ft of water.

    The Rev Jonny Gios from Sandylands Methodist Church, told BBC Radio Cumbria people didn't know how to take advantage of funds like the £50m announced by the Chancellor, George Osborne, yesterday.

    Four days after the village of Glenridding in Cumbria was hit by storm Desmond, there has been more heavy rain overnight. 

    Emma Edgar is staying in a holiday cottage after her home was flooded in the first deluge

    She said: "We're stuck up the lane, where below, the river has burst its banks. From what I believe, my dad's been bailing out all night and has managed to save what we had in the house and the water hasn't got in to cause any more damage.

      "It's been very unsafe at the bottom of where we are staying. We're just going to crack on and help everyone else and make sure ourselves are safe and try again for the second time this week to allow people and businesses to regain their livelihoods."

    Police are advising motorists not to drive through any floodwater, external they cannot judge the depth of. 

    They also say to allow plenty of time for your journey and check the flood risk before setting off.

  8. Historic Ullswater boat 'saved by beaching'published at 08:53

    One of the Ullswater steamers, the Lady Wakefield, was dramatically beached on a slipway when crew members trying to sail her to safety realised she'd been damaged.

    Rachel Bell, from the company that runs the Ullswater steamers, told BBC Radio Cumbria the boat, built in 1949, was being moved because she was in danger where she was moored on the Pooley Bridge pier.

    Crew members did exactly the right thing to beach her, she said.

    The A592 is closed between the Greenside Road junction in Glenridding and the B5320 junction in Pooley Bridge because of flooding.A diversion is in operation, but is reported to be about 50 miles long.

  11. Travel: Carlisle links open, but bridge shutpublished at 08:31

    In Carlisle, Castle Way is now open in both directions. 

    But Eden Bridge will remain closed until it's been inspected, so access between the northern and southern banks is via the M6 or the bypass.

  14. 'Devastating to see other businesses' affectedpublished at 08:00

    Volunteers formed a human chain across the flood in Glenridding last night to help people out of affected buildings. 

    The manager of the Inn on the Lake, Gary Wilson, said their hotel had set itself up as a refuge centre.

    "It's just devastating to see other businesses, obviously close friends, people we've known a lot of years just suffering like this after they'd worked so hard over the last two days to get things cleaned up..."
