  1. Kendal's oldest building swamped with waterpublished at 18:24

    The Castle Dairy, the oldest continuously inhabited building in Kendal, has been swamped with water.

    The building dates back to the 14th Century. It's now used as a restaurant to train students at Kendal College, and the food has been highly praised., external

    But it'll now be months before customers can eat there. Here's some pictures taken by BBC journalist Ed Hanson.

  3. Helicopter crew rescues family from raging floodwaterpublished at 18:12

    A coastguard search and rescue team have spoken about their daring rescue of six people from Pooley Bridge this weekend.

    At the height of the storm, the Canearfon-based crew saved two men, two woman, a 10-year-old girl and a 20-month-old baby from a house just downstream from Pooley Bridge.

    In this picture you can see Ian O'Grady rescuing one of the casualties, with winch operator Zack Stubbings guiding the line. Winchman Ian O'Grady said the bridge, which had stood for 251 years, was swept away soon afterwards, so it was a critical rescue. 

    "We recovered six people from an incredibly hazardous environment but because of the aircraft we've got and the necessity to get them away from that environment it was an easy decision to effect the rescue we did," he said.

  8. Doctors taken to village by mountain rescue teamspublished at 17:46

    A pair of doctors have been ferried to Glenridding through deep floods in Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team's Land Rovers.

    Mountain rescue volunteers took Dr Neil Margerison and Dr Lucy Dickinson from Aira Force on Ullswater into the village.

    Earlier the team used its rescue boat to carry people and supplies the length of the lake, because the roads were impassable even in 4x4 vehicles.

    The PM has told @BBC_Cumbria, external he does not accept cuts to public services have made it harder to respond to emergencies. 

    Speaking in Carlisle, David Cameron paid tribute to the emergency services and said the county council will get extra funding to deal with the crisis.

  14. Customers thanked after second power cut hitspublished at 16:48

    Electricity North West says power was restored this morning but went back off for more than 40,000 homes and businesses this afternoon.

    Operations director Mark Williamson says: “Unfortunately power has been lost to customers in Lancaster and surrounding areas. “We are onsite and investigating the cause and we will update customers as soon as we find out more and again we would like to thank our customers for their patience and support during what continues to be an enormously challenging time for everyone involved.” Some 2,657 properties remain without power in Cumbria as flood water is "restricting access".

  16. Cameron tours flood-hit Carlisle woman's homepublished at 16:41

    David Cameron also met a woman whose house flooded as he visited the streets of Carlisle. 

    The Prime Minister was shown inside the home of mother-of-three Lesa Boyko, whose home on Warwick Road was hit by 2ft of flood water as the River Eden breached flood defences.

    Mr Cameron toured her home, and accompanied by Environment Agency officials looked at the defences which were over-topped by water during the deluge, flooding hundreds of surrounding homes and businesses in nearby streets.  

  17. PM pays tribute to emergency servicespublished at 16:35

    After seeing some of the damage Storm Desmond caused in Carlisle, Prime Minister David Cameron paid tribute to the rescue effort, saying:

  18. Flooding in Cumbria 'absolutely horrific' - Cameronpublished at 16:30

    Prime Minister David Cameron has been speaking from Carlisle, where he's visited some of the worst-hit areas. 

    "It's an absolutely horrific thing to happen, and for many of these people it's not the first time that it's happened - which is why we built these great barriers here, which have prevented Carlisle from being flooded on two other occasions," he said.

    "But they weren't enough this time - something like 14 inches of rain in 24 hours, it really was torrential."

    For those forced out of their homes, the key is making sure their insurance is sorted quickly and alternative accommodation is found for them, he added.
