The Environment Agency says it's expecting the River Eden to peak in Carlisle between 22:00 and 23:00 this evening.
It's expecting it to flood low lying areas such as Rickerby Park and possibly Low Crosby, but isn't expecting problems in Carlisle itself.
The river peaked in Appleby just after 17:00 and some properties have flooded there.

With Brunton Park under water, Carlisle have three 'home' fixtures at neutral grounds and beat Notts County at Preston's Deepdale stadium on Saturday.
Stanley's last two home games were postponed because of waterlogging.
Coleman told BBC Radio Lancashire: "We are now games behind Carlisle. We've had two postponements and they've been allowed to play elsewhere and I don't think it's right or fair."
It'll be a windy night with gales in the west of the county and some heavy showers.

The bridge is the only road link within the town, and locals face a long detour until it reopens.
Water swept at least 18in (45cm) deep along The Sands in Appleby as the River Eden burst its banks for the second time this afternoon.
Locals say the water always comes in past the Bowling Club.
Most of the properties will have protected themselves with small floodgates in the doors or sandbags, with a local flood action group providing help.
The Met Office says there''s a possibility of rain from Christmas night through Boxing Day.
The organisers of the flood support centre in Kendal say they've enough aid for weeks and don't need any more.
A huge variety of items from food to clothes and buckets fills room after room in the Westmorland Shopping Centre in Kendal.
Rachel Ellis of the flood support centre said: "Even those covered by insurance will have a lot of hidden costs over the next few months.
“We want everyone to know that it’s okay to ask for help, we have tonnes of things here that could make your life a little bit easier in the coming weeks and months."

The River Eden at Appleby is peaking, but areas downstream have yet to see the highest point. The Kent through Kendal is now falling.
Cumbria's firefighters say they've been called to a number of flood-related incidents - including pumping around 3cm (1in) of water out of Keswick Rugby Club.
Other crews pumped water out of the Glenridding Hotel and properties in Kirkby Stephen, Coniston and Broughton in Furness.

A number of roads across Cumbria are still affected by flooding. They include roads around Ravenstonedale and Warcop, the A66 between Portinscale and Dubwath, the A595 at Grizedale and the A591 in a number of places between Kendal and Ambleside.
The Methodist minister for the Sandylands area of Kendal has been speaking of the fears of his parishioners as the River Kent rose again today.
The estate was one of the worst hit areas of Kendal, and workers from South Lakes Housing are still working seven days a week to repair homes there.
With more than 2,000 homes and businesses flooded, the town was proportionately worse hit than Carlisle. The Kent is now falling.
Jonny Gios said: "We've just had one lady come in, in tears, very anxious. The river's very high at the moment, right at the top of the bank."
A number of events are being planned to try to help Cumbria's flood victims have as good a Christmas as possible.
The Big Cumbrian Christmas Day Get Together, external will have day centres open in Carlisle, Penrith,Ulverston, Cockermouth, Langwathby and Kendal.
Organiser Richard Francis says the response from volunteers and businesses providing help such as food have been amazing.
There are also other events at various locations.
The River Eden has started to flood the Sands at Appleby and is getting closer to properties there.
The Environment Agency says river levels are expected to peak between 15:00 and 17:00.
There is a lot of surface water on the county's roads but no reports of mass flooding of properties.
