  2. South Lakeland council starts handing out sandbagspublished at 09:54

    South Lakeland council staff have started handing out sandbags from the depots at Canal Head, Ecclerigg, Ulverston, and a limited supply at Broad Street in Windermere.

    A spokesman said river levels are expected to remain high through the day and could peak again at about 14:00.

    Almost 50mm (2in) of rain has fallen at Shap since yesterday evening.

  3. Travel: Floods hit South Cumbria roadspublished at 09:37

    Travel is difficult in several parts of South Cumbria. 

    The A591 between Kendal and Ambleside is passable only with difficulty, particularly near White Cross bay where there are abandoned vehicles.

    The A684 is flooded in several places between Kendal and Sedbergh, particularly near Parkside Road. And the A590's flooded in the usual place at Lindal.  

    There are a number of other trouble spots - social networks say Ravenstonedale is virtually cut off.

  4. School children release single for Cumbria flood victimspublished at 09:22

    Two school children from Newcastle have released a Christmas single to raise money for the victims of the floods in Cumbria. 

    Stefan, eight, and Ellen, five, have recorded a rendition of Hark the Herald Angels Sing with all proceeds going to the Cumbrian Relief Fund, external.

    The children normally spend part of the Christmas break in Cockermouth but the hotel they planned to stay in was flooded by Storm Desmond earlier this month.

  5. Travel: M6 lane closed after crashpublished at 09:07

    One lane is closed on the M6 southbound between J39, B6261 (Shap) and J38, A685 (Tebay) because of an accident.

  6. Bridge diversion 'not good enough'published at 08:50

    The diversion around Eamont Bridge on the A6 near Penrith has been changed this morning after local complaints that it used unsuitable roads.

    Yesterday the bridge was declared unsafe after divers finally got to inspect the foundations.

    A county council spokesman said the damage to the bridge was extensive, and engineers were still assessing the next step.

    Councillor Kevin Beaty, who's leader of Eden Council, said he accepted it might not be possible to repair the bridge quickly, but a diversion around Brougham Castle was unsuitable. He said the effect on businesses could be severe.

  8. Travel: Lots of roads affected by floodingpublished at 08:26

    A number of roads are only passable with care, mainly across the south of the county.  

    The A591 is affected in a number of places from Kendal through Windermere to Ambleside. 

    The A684 was impassable at one point between Sedbergh and the M6 earlier this morning, and the conditions are also difficult close to Castle Green Road.  

    The A590's flooded again at Ulverston. Rail services are also affected on most lines.

    There are still several roads and bridges restricted or closed because of the flooding a fortnight ago.

  9. Weather: Wet and windy start, drier laterpublished at 08:06

    It's a wild morning to start with, with heavy rain and winds gusting to 50mph (80kph).  

    The rain's heavy enough for a yellow warning but it should edge away south eastwards through the morning, and it'll be cooler. 

    The temperatures will start around 13C (55F), dropping to 9C (48F).
