    Two men who admitted burgling a home in Kendal while the occupant was inside have been jailed for 18 months.

    Carlisle Crown Court was told the householder had earlier spoken to the men after he saw them outside his home, shortly afterwards heard a window smashing at the back of the property, and then seen one of them reaching in.

    Police later recovered stolen property and David Morrison, 38, of Wattsfield Road, Kendal, and 40-year-old Martin Buchanan, of Kirkland in the town, both admitted burglary.

    Cumbria's Director of Public Health, Colin Cox, says people must be rigorous in their social distancing they want restrictions to ease before Christmas.

    Dr Cox was speaking after the weekly update on coronavirus in Cumbria showed tere had been 844 new cases in the county in the latest week, up from 722 the previous week.

  3. Cumbria's weather: Very mild with more rain at firstpublished at 17:45

    Outbreaks of rain will continue through this evening and overnight, accompanied by brisk southwesterly winds.

    It will be a mild night under cloudy skies with the rain clearing later and lowest temperatures from 8C to 11C (46F to 52F).

    There is still a Met Office weather warning, external for tomorrow although the heaviest rain is not expected to return until the evening.

  4. Three flood alerts posted as rain keeps fallingpublished at 17:40

    There are now three flood alerts, external posted for Cumbria, the lowest level of risk, covering the upper Derwent area in the north and the Duddon, Crake, Mill Beck, Brathay, Rothay and Winster in the south.

    Both Coniston Water and Windermere are high, and flooding is possible on low-lying land and roads in all the surrounding areas.

    The Environment Agency says flooding is possible across a large area of northern England, external between now and Sunday.

    There is already one flood alert in place for the upper Derwent and Derwent Water, external, and more are expected.

    Yellow weather warnings cover the whole county and south west Scotland through until late on Sunday, with up to 250mm (10in) expected on the highest fells by the end of the weekend.

    It will be largely cloudy and rain will continue this afternoon, with some heavy bursts of rain in places.

    Cumbrian business leaders say changes to the way the government's supporting jobs after the end of the furlough system should help more local firms survive.

    About 78,000 people in the county have been supported by the furlough system since the first restrictions came in last March, and many businesses still need help after the system ends this weekend.

    Jo Lappin from the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership said the final form of the Job Support Scheme (JSS) provided a lot more help than the earlier proposals from the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, and a recent survey suggested three quarters of businesses now felt that they could survive the next six months.

    She said employees could now work fewer hours to qualify and, secondly, the government will make a bigger cash contribution towards wages so employers don't have to pay so much.

    A man's being questioned after what police say may have been a knife attack in Carlisle last night.

    The victim was treated in hospital for a slash wound to his arm.

    A 43-year-old man from Carlisle was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after the incident in Currock Road, near the Bryan Fell garage, at about 22:20 last night.

    Officers would like to hear from anyone in the area at the time.

    Police say a man with a knife threatened two staff members in a convenience store in Workington at about 23:00 last night.

    Neither were injured, but the robber took a small amount of money from the McColls store on Harrington Road before making off.

    It took firefighters 12 hours to deal with a fire in a barn full of hay in Gosforth in west Cumbria.

    It started just before 11:00 yesterday morning, and firefighters, who say the barn was well alight, struggled with a difficult water supply.

    Four fire engines and an incident command unit were sent to the incident, including a water bowser from the Sellafield fire service.

    The government is expected to make an announcement today about whether Barrow's tier two coronavirus status will be changed.

    It's understood the local recommendation to ministers is to remain with the higher tier across the borough, although infection rates have begun to fall.

    The rest of the county remains on tier one - medium risk, although a sharp rise in new cases in Carlisle means the city could move to a higher level of restrictions soon.

    Assistant Chief Constable Andy Slattery, who chairs the group of health and council representatives leading the county's response to the pandemic, says the decision on tiers depends on more than just the basic level of new infections.

    A Cumbrian woman has spoken of the moment she thought her three-year-old son had been killed when her car was struck by what's believed to be a lorry, which did not stop.

    The crash happened while the boy's mother, Charlotte, nipped back into her home to collect a mobile phone charger, leaving her son sitting in the vehicle.

    Cumbria police are appealing for information about the incident which happened on Monday lunchtime in the village of Holme near Burton-in-Kendal.

    Two Manchester brothers who made drug-dealing day trips to north Cumbria and used "text bombs" to advertise substances for sale have been jailed.

    Police who stopped a Seat Leon on the M6 between Penrith and Carlisle in January last year found Ashley Hayes, 34, driving and 30-year-old sibling Blake Hayes in the passenger seat, and a package thrown from the car contained cannabis.

    Three mobile phones stored dozens of "bulk" messages offering drugs for sale on 17 visits to Carlisle which according to the prosecution could have meant each trip netted thousands of pounds.

    Ashley Hayes, of Burgin Walk, Collyhurst, and Blake Hayes, of Tufton Walk, Harpurhey, both in Manchester, admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis, and were jailed for 24 months and 27 months respectively.

  17. Barrow police seek driver who knocked boy off bicyclepublished at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October 2020

    Police are trying to trace the driver of a black car, possible an Audi 4X4, that knocked a you cyclist of his bike and then drove off.

    It happened at about 11:00 yesterday at the junction of Lord Street and Harrison street, and the boy suffered a suspected broken leg.

    Officers say they'd like to hear from anyone with information of dashcam footage that might help.

    Blustery winds and showers will begin to ease through this evening and overnight, with clear spells developing at times.

    Cloud will be build in from the west in the early hours with lowest temperatures from 2C to 5C (36F to 41F).

    The yellow warning for heavy rain across Cumbria, external has been updated to start earlier tomorrow, and last through until Saturday evening.

    Met Office forecasters say rainfall of up to 40mm (1.6in) can be expected widely, with up to 150mm (6in) on the highest fells, by Friday evening, with more on Saturday.

    Flooding is possible and any surface water could be made worse on the roads because of autumn leaves blocking the drains.

    Royal British Legion branches across Cumbria are preparing for Remembrance Sunday, but without most of the usual ceremonies because of Covid-19 so they are urging people to mark the traditional two-minute silence at home.

    In Kendal, the usual parade has been cancelled, and people laying wreaths on the town's Memorial in the Market Place are asked to turn up through the day rather than congregating at 11:00.

    There will be a service at the parish church on 8 November, but worshippers are asked to wear face coverings and arrive early so details can be taken.

    And the Mayor, Councillor Alvin Finch, will lay a wreath at 11:00, but accompanied only by a lone bugler to sound the Last Post.
