    The charity that promotes the coastal paths and other attractions of Morecambe Bay has started renting out all-terrain buggies so more people can enjoy them.

    The Morecambe Bay Partnership says one in 10 people living in Cumbria lack the strength or mobility to walk far.

    Delays have been building up in Kendal after northbound traffic was diverted off the M6 because of a crash involving a car and a lorry between junctions 36 and 37.

    Traffic caught in the tailback on the northbound carriageway is now being released with one lane reopened, while one lane remains closed southbound, causing delays at times.

    The man in charge of North Cumbria's major hospitals has told BBC Radio Cumbria he's confident their financial deficit can be be wiped out by 2021.

    Stephen Eames said the long-term deficit had been halved in the last two years.

    He was speaking on the day the NHS nationally launched a new 10-year plan, identifying how the extra money the service would be given over the next five years, would be spent.

    A third of the money will be spent on GPs, community care and mental health, and Mr Eames, who is in charge of the trust that runs these across Cumbria, said people would notice the difference.

    A Gambian man married to a Barrow woman for eight years has been told to leave the UK.

    The Home Office says Ousman Jaiteh must leave now his spousal visa has expired and his appeal has been rejected.

    Mr Jaiteh started a crowdfunding campaign, external, with his Walney wife Kathleen Irwin, to oppose his deportation and condemned the decision as "cruel".

    The Home Office says those applying for leave to remain must demonstrate that there would be insurmountable obstacles to continuing family life outside the UK.

    But like many clubs in the sport, the Comets are thought to have lost thousands of pounds last season.

    Laura Morgan says she could sell all, or part, of the Comets but will continue for the season if no one puts up an offer.

    Police say they believe Robert Hadfield, who detectives say is wanted in connection with offences including assault and criminal damage, is still in West Cumbria.

    Mr Hadfield, 27, is from Whitehaven and police believe he may either still be in the town, or in neighbouring Workington.

    Mountain rescue teams and a number of Lake District rescue dogs spent two days helping police try to find Albert Birkett, 69, who has not been seen since 2 January.

    Mr Birkett was last seen wearing his work clothes, a green boiler suit, and he is described as being slim, with short grey hair.

    The dogs and handlers, joined by members of Cockermouth mountain rescue team, helped search large areas of coast and marshland, but nothing was found.

    This morning police said he had still not been found.

    A Cumbrian mother says it's shameful that some families are having to wait too long for support plans for children with special educational needs, but she says the council is not to blame.

    Figures seen by BBC News show Cumbria County Council has taken longer than the 20-week time limit to deal with applications for Education, Health and Care Plans more than 300 times since 2014.

    Council officials say they processed 1,366 cases on time over the period, and last year hit the deadline in 86% of cases, well above the national average.

    Cristina Bowman's son Max has behavioural problems and has been given a plan. She says the council is not to blame for delays.

    Police say the woman who died after being hit by a car in Kendal yesterday was 81-year old Maureen Harrison.

    She was on Windermere Road at the junction with Green Hill when the accident happened at 14:30 yesterday.

    Police are appealing for witnesses, and any dascham footage from the time.

  19. Cumbria's weak bridges highlighted in RAC studypublished at 09:48 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2019

    Cumbria has 71 bridges classed as "substandard", according to a study by the motoring charity, the RAC Foundation, external.

    The organisation puts Cumbria eighth out of all the councils in Britain for the number of bridges that are not strong enough to carry the heaviest vehicles, or are subject to weight restrictions.

    The Local Government Association says the study underlines the chronic need for more investment in local roads.
