    United haven't lost in four games since appointing Chris Beech as their new head coach, but have only won one in their last games in the league.

  2. Firefighters free man from crash wreckage on snowy passpublished at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2019

    Firefighters freed a man from the wreckage after a two-vehicle collision on a snowbound Kirkstone Pass near Ambleside yesterday.

    The pass was closed for a number of hours and volunteers from the Langdale-Ambleside and Patterdale mountain rescue teams were called to help.

    The man was carried to an ambulance and taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary but there's no word on his condition.

    The Kirkstone Pass road was littered with vehicles and the team had to suggest to many motorists heading over the pass that they really should turn around and make a route diversion to their intended destination.

    After a cold start with heavy showers, it will be breezy and bright with sunny spells.

    Most areas will stay dry but with a chance of a shower over high ground, and highest temperatures from 4C to 7C (39F to 45F).

    The cricketer, Ben Stokes, who grew up in Cumbria and this year helped England to win the World Cup, has been named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

    The award, decided by a public vote, reflects his winning role in the world cup against New Zealand, and a key performance in an Ashes Test, but also includes an element of redemption for Stokes, who was cleared of affray charges following an incident outside a nightclub in 2017.

    Mr Jenkinson who is deputy leader, and represents Seaton and Northside, has announced he will relinquish his seat on the authority

    He will go at a time to be decided after talks with other councillors and the leader, Independent councillor Marion Fitzgerald, who said he had been a very good deputy leader.

    Campaigners for off-road driving enthusiasts to be banned from two tracks near Little Langdale have taken the first steps towards challenging the policies of the Lake District National Park in the courts.

    Earlier this year the national park authority decided to work with landowners and the off-roaders, rather than bring in orders to restrict motorcycles and 4X4 vehicles on the two lanes, which were originally built to serve quarries and farms and never surfaced.

    This week the Green Lanes Environmental Action Movement said it had obtained a barrister's opinion and was now raising funds to challenge the decisions in court.

    The national park authority confirmed it had been sent a letter before action "detailing proposed judicial review proceedings", but made no other comment.

    Police say the woman whose body was found at Pooley Bridge yesterday was Diane Rumney, 53, from Greystoke.

    She had been reported missing on Wednesday evening, and police and mountain rescue volunteers had been involved in the search.

    Officers say there are no suspicious circumstances, and the coroner has been informed.

  15. Teenage driver in high-speed chase gets suspended sentencepublished at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

    A teenage dangerous driver from Carlisle, who led police on a late-night pursuit along residential roads, has been spared immediate custody.

    Carlisle Crown Court heard Kameron Wooldridge, 19, drove off from police on Park Road in Barrow, reaching 50mph before clipping a kerb and bursting a tyre, leaving him travelling on just the wheel rim before he was caught.

    Wooldridge, of Acredale Road, Carlisle, admitted dangerous driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, no insurance and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

    After considering mitigation, Judge Peter Davies suspended an eight-month custodial term for two years, and imposed rehabilitation, 100 hours' unpaid work, and a two-year driving ban with an extended test to follow.

    Police and bar owners in Whitehaven say that anyone barred for causing trouble in pubs and clubs over the new few weeks could face a 13-month ban.

    The bans would cover the Pubwatch network of 25 public houses and other licensed premises, and the idea is to bar people for both the rest of this festive season, and next Christmas as well.

    Jason Fisher, chairman of Whitehaven Pubwatch, said: “What we’re doing is aiming to make sure people can come out to enjoy a safe and enjoyable night.”
