    • Temperatures at 3,000ft (900m): Around -2C (28F)
    • Winds: Northwesterly 30mph to 40mph at first with gusts to 55mph, but turning westerly 20mph to 30mph later, with gusts to 40mph
    • Cloud base: Any cloud during the morning or afternoon will be isolated and with bases above 2,600ft (800m)
    • Freezing level: Around 2,300ft (700m)
    • Visibility: Good or excellent

    It was hail rather than snow making the fells look wintry for the fell top assessors of the Lake District Weatherline service, external, who say storm-force winds and a temperature then just above freezing made for a wild day on the hills.

    The last of the Virgin West Coast Main Line trains in Britain's longest-running rail franchise ran through the county at the weekend.

    The new operator is called Avanti West Coast, external and it is a partnership between the Aberdeen-based company First, and the Italian national rail firm, Trenitalia.

    The new operators are promising, external refurbished and new trains, more services and better catering.
