  4. Workington: Conservative gainpublished at 01:56 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

Mark Jenkinson has been elected as the MP for Workington, beating shadow environment secretary Sue Hayman by 4,176 votes.

The Conservative Party overturned a 3,925 vote majority to take the formerly Labour-held seat.

David Walker of the Brexit Party came third and Liberal Democrat Neil Hughes came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 1.4 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 42,000 people, roughly two-thirds of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Five of the seven candidates lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

This story was created using some automation.

  12. General Election 2019: Things to watch out for on the nightpublished at 23:10 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2019

    Professor Sir John Curtice
    Polling expert

If Mr Johnson is to win an overall majority, he is likely to have to win a significant number of marginal seats from Labour.

Of Labour's 50 most marginal seats, as many as 39 voted in favour of Leave in the 2016 referendum. In 16, more than 60% voted Leave.

These leave-inclined marginals - in north-east Wales, the Midlands and the north of England - are said to form Labour's "red wall".

They are seats in which Labour came only narrowly ahead of the Conservatives in the 2017 election. Many, such as Bishop Auckland, Workington, and Wrexham, have traditionally been safe Labour seats. Indeed, some of them have never returned a Conservative in a post-war general election.

  17. Source: 'Large turnouts in Brexit-voting parts of the North East'published at 22:20 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2019

    Richard Moss
    Political Editor, BBC Look North

The exit poll certainly suggests the Conservatives could go beyond their initial target seats in the North East and Cumbria.

If right, Bishop Auckland, Stockton South, Darlington and Workington might have gone.

The likes of Sedgefield, Blyth Valley are certainly in play - and maybe beyond that.

I'm certainly hearing of large turnouts in Brexit-voting parts of the North East.

Conservative sources are suggesting it may be voters who turned out in 2016 determined to show backing for leaving the EU.

There will be fury among many Labour candidates in the North East and Cumbria at leadership and strategy that could turn red seats blue here - even possibly losing Tony Blair's former Sedgefield seat.

No results are in yet of course though.

  19. Labour supporter reacts to exit poll: 'Oh no'published at 22:16 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2019

The Conservatives are set to win an overall majority of 86 in the general election, according to an exit poll for the BBC, ITV and Sky News.

The survey taken at UK polling stations suggests the Tories will get 368 MPs - 50 more than at the 2017 election - when all the results have been counted.

The reaction was swift in Whitehaven in Cumbria:
