    We told you about the auction of personal belongings of the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire which went under the hammer at Sotheby's yesterday.

    The total raised from the auction was £1.77m - more than double the highest estimate of about £700,000.

    Match.com says it agrees with comments made by Judge Gregory Dickinson in court today that Jason Lawrance's case offers people in the online dating industry an opportunity to "learn and take steps to protect users".

    A spokesman for the site said the safety of members should be everyone's highest priority.

    Its statement added: "The online dating industry faces similar challenges to those that social media sites and society as a whole.

    "Sadly there is a tiny minority of people who set out to harm others, and the ways of doing so are always changing."

    The Conservatives in Derby say they'll build a swimming pool and waterpark if they win the next election and gain control of the city council.

    During a debate on the closure of Moorways the Conservative leader Matthew Holmes revealed his vision for a traditional pool, training pools and a leisure complex complete with flumes and children's play structures.

    BBC Radio Derby understands the union Unison is balloting its school support staff members in Derby over their willingness to take strike action.

    It's part of a dispute with the city council over pay.

    A match.com spokesman said the company has the "most heartfelt concern" for the victims and has a "zero tolerance policy" for reports of serious offences.

    The firm said it had been unable to initially remove Lawrance's profile because the abusive messages had been sent outside its website.

    It said it therefore encouraged users to communicate within the site where it has technology to spot unacceptable behaviour.

    During the trial it was also revealed Lawrance had been arrested by Lincolnshire Police in 2013 after one of his victims reported she had been raped by him at her home.

    He was released on bail after officers said they had “insufficient evidence” to charge him.

    Det Supt Rick Hatton said rape and sexual assault was a complex crime to investigate and they were constantly seeking to improve their methods.

    Their statement continued that Lawrance’s case was only made stronger once more victims came forward.

    Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen has signed a three-year contract extension and has been explaining why today.

    He said: "I love playing for Derbyshire and I'm delighted to now commit my long-term future to the club.

    "We have a squad which is getting better all the time and I want to continue to play my part.

    We've been reporting on the life sentence handed out to serial rapist Jason Lawrance at Derby Crown Court today, and Judge Gregory Dickinson has said online dating company Match.com and the police could learn lessons from the case.

    It's after the trial heard that four victims had previously reported his behaviour to the website, but his profile wasn't removed.

    I've contacted the dating site to ask why Lawrance's profile wasn't taken down following the complaints from women, and it says it's working on a statement.
