    Mike Ashley accused MPs of "abusing parliamentary procedure" in an on-going row over whether he should appear before a select committee in Westminster.

    Replying to a House of Commons letter, he wrote: "I was disgusted to learn that you have adopted a stance that is deliberately antagonistic.

    "By refusing to visit Sports Direct to see things with your own eyes, you are missing out on a genuine opportunity to gain a detailed and balanced understanding of the matters you wish to discuss.

    Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley has brushed off a call to give evidence to a Commons select committee about the treatment of his workers.

    The Newcastle United owner was warned he would be in contempt of Parliament unless he agreed to a date to appear before MPs.

    Today he hit back, accusing the committee's chairman of creating a "media circus" which was not in the interests of his staff.

    He gave no offer of a date but did repeat an invitation for the committee to visit Sport Direct's premises in Shirebrook.

    A man is due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court today charged with murder after a woman was found dead at the scene of a house fire in Chesterfield.

    Gary Tyson, 35, of Shirland Street in the town, has been charged with murder, arson and attempted wounding.

    Firefighters found the body of 32-year-old Gemma Stevens at her home in Catherine Street in the early hours of 3 March.

    After reconstructing the build-up to a rape attack in Derby, external on the BBC's Crimewatch programme last night, Derbyshire Police is hoping it will lead to a prosecution.   

    Insp Emlyn Richards said: "What it did is it gave us a more national perspective, where as many of the appeals previously have been relatively localised to the East Midlands area.

    "Last night we had people ringing in from all across the UK suggesting names of people that fitted the description of the offender on the programme or that they had suspicions about, so we're really pleased with the response."

    Let's return to a story we featured yesterday about BBC Crimewatch running an appeal on an unsolved rape case in Darley Abbey, external.

    Derbyshire Police says it's had a really strong response to the broadcast and it has given their investigation a broader perspective.

    Despite several previous appeals, nobody has been arrested over an attack on an 18-year-old woman near a nature reserve in September.

    Colin Bloomfield's story, external touched hundreds of people and it's testimony to him that the appeal he lent his name to aimed at making Derbyshire and East Staffordshire sun safe raised more than £152,000.
