    Vanessa Coates has been talking about returning to the farmhouse which was badly damaged in a fire nine weeks ago.

    She said: "I'm afraid you can still smell the smoke quite badly. Rather fruitlessly I've been trying to open windows, open doors, trying to get rid of the smell, but the smell doesn't seem to want to go as yet.

    "So it's a case of constant reminder, but we've manged to salvage some things, so it's now a semi-empty shell ready for the next stage hopefully."

    Nine weeks after a fire ripped through their Ashover home, the Coates family have moved back into a caravan at their farm site.

    Friends have helped by donating generators, barbecues and even some piglets.

    So will the residents who want a waste site near their homes shut down following a fly infestation get their wish?

    Steve Prophet, from the Environment Agency, says they have the power to close a site, but said the priority is to see who's been responsible for the problem.

    He said: "Those people providing this company [Shows Waste Management] with waste have responsibility, they have a duty of care to give their waste to appropriate people. They've clearly not exercised that, so there's a broader web of our investigation."

    The community spirit certainly comes out when problems occur, such as the flies which have been plaguing residents in the Slack Lane area of Derby.

    She said: "We want all the waste shifted, every little bit, then sanitised, dowsing, fogging, the lot, so then it starts fresh. But then we do not want a waste recycling premises on our estate."
