    It's not clear whether Peaty - who is currently away on holiday - will accept the award.

    His mum, Caroline, told BBC Radio Derby this morning her son thinks it would be a "huge honour".

    But Kalwinder Singh Dhindsa wrote on Facebook, external: "Adam should decline it as a protest. The people of Derby will understand. Our Council leadership is an embarrassment."

    Councillor Baggy Shanker said the city helped turn Peaty into a gold medal winner.

    "It's here in Derby he's done all his training to get in the position he is now," he said.

    Olympic swimming champion Adam Peaty could be given the Freedom of Derby.

    Council leader Ranjit Banwait, who has put forward the proposal, said: "Some will say we can’t talk about inspiring people without also talking about the swimming facilities in Derby [but] we have made a commitment to build a new pool and we will build a new pool."

    What on EARTH could he be talking about, external, I wonder?

    A further heads-up, commuters...

    There's heavy traffic on the A52 Brian Clough Way eastbound in Derby between the Pentagon Island and the A5111 Raynesway junction, heavy traffic on the A38 Kingsway southbound in Derby between Markeaton Island and Kingsway Island.

    In addition, there's slow traffic on the A38 southbound in Little Eaton at Little Eaton Island.
