    More firearms officers will be coming to the East Midlands to support the region's police forces while the UK's threat level for terror attacks remains "critical."

    The officers, who have come from the strategic policing reserve, will be deployed on the streets of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire from tonight.

    The strategic policing reserve is made up of police officers from the Civil Nuclear Authority, Ministry of Defence Police and British Transport Police.

    There are currently no plans to deploy the military to the East Midlands.

    A Leicestershire Police special constable has appeared in court charged with a series of offences including criminal damage, harassment and possession of a weapon for the discharge of a noxious gas.

    A stretch of the A38 will be closed next week as police escort an abnormal load through South Derbyshire and into Staffordshire .

    The load is a number of huge brewery drums destined for the Molson Coors site in Burton.

    At about 20:00 on Thursday evening the delivery will travel along the A50 from Doveridge, then along the A516 towards the A38.

    The northbound carriageway will be closed from Egginton to Clay Mills so the convoy can use it to travel south.

    The force also wanted to stress that the noises were nothing to be worried about, following Monday's attack in Manchester.

    Leicester-based crisps maker Walkers has had a marketing campaign hijacked by Twitter users.

    Offering followers the chance to win tickets to the Champions League final, users were soon replying with distasteful photos, including images of killers Fred West and Harold Shipman.

    The user's picture would then be incorporated into a personalised video, featuring Gary Lineker, automatically tweeted and captioned by Walkers.

    Walkers has apologised for what happened.

    Notts County have signed striker Lewis Alessandra from Hartlepool United for an undisclosed fee.

    Alessandra, 28, has signed a two-year-deal at Meadow Lane.

    Magpies boss Kevin Nolan told the club's official website:, external "There were a number of clubs interested in Lewis and it looked tricky at one stage, but I’m absolutely delighted that he chose to come and work with us."

    A female jogger has been attacked after reportedly turning down the sexual advances of a stranger.

    The woman was in Wollaton Park at about 21:45 on Wednesday when she was approached by a man.

    After speaking to her he became "sexually suggestive" but when she refused he punched her in the head.

    Officers described the man as black, aged about 30, 6ft 2in tall and of average build, with short black hair and stubble.

    He was wearing a dark-coloured polo shirt and grey jogging bottoms.
