  3. Horse left to die in 'excruciating' painpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 26 May 2017

    BBC Local Live

A man who left his horse to die an “agonising” death has been disqualified from keeping equines for life.

Simon Nall, of Clarence Road in Long Eaton, failed to attend to his horse Storm for several months.

    Quote Message

This is one of the worst cases of animal cruelty that this bench has seen. It was your responsibility to prevent this. You made no attempt to check on the animal and you showed no remorse."

Philip Hickson, Chairman of the magistrates

Storm belonged to Nall and was stabled with four other horses belonging to his mother and sister.

The 20-year-old claimed to believe his mother had been looking after Storm - and said that was why he didn't check on him.

The RSPCA has said it was called by a concerned member of the public in October last year - they found Storm’s decomposing body in a stable, and faeces all over the floor.

The animal was underweight, his hooves were 14 to 20 centimeters long and he had been suffering from chronic laminitis.

The vet who examined his body said this would have been excruciating.

    Quote Message

I have never seen a horse in such a bad way before - it is clear that Storm’s last few days of his life were agonising. If he’d been attended to, and properly, then this could have been avoided. The responsibility of owning an animal does not go away if you turn a blind eye.”

    Laura Bryant, RSPCA inspector

As well as a ban on keeping horses Nall was given an 18-week prison sentence suspended for two years.

He was ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work, given a three-month curfew order and told to pay £515.

    BBC Local Live

If, like me, you're not a fan of creepy crawlies this might just get you worried...it seems a swarm of flying mini beasts are descending on parts of Leicestershire.

These large beetles have orange legs, wings and bizarre antennae...

    CockchaferImage source, Getty Images

These strange creatures have been baffling people living in Barrow on Soar and Burton in the Wolds where they seem to be appearing in big numbers.

So what are they? We've asked expert Dr Luke Tilley who said they are called Cockchafers.

    Quote Message

In the UK we have around 4,000 different specie of beetle and people send to notice this one because it's so big and has these striking, fan shaped antennae at the front. They start their life as larvae and live in the soil feeding off roots - they can do that for two to five years. What you're seeing now is just the adults coming out for the last few weeks of their life-cycle so they can have a bit of food and find mates."

Dr Luke Tilley, Deputy Chief Executive, Royal Entomological Society
