Liz Kendall has praised a Labour Party activist who revealed she was the victim of a sex attack at a political event in 2001.

Bex Bailey, from Nottingham, said she was discouraged from reporting the rape at the time because it could "damage" her.

Ms Bailey used to work for the Leicester West MP Liz Kendall.

She's told the BBC there are now calls within the party for an independent third-party reporting system to help women speak out if they are a victim.

    Quote Message

Understandable people within the party, who work for the party, don't want to see the party brought into disrepute but really they should be focusing on the women who have been subject to harassment or assault."

Professor Joanne Lymn, head of health sciences at the University of Nottingham, said: “Claire was a wonderful student who worked hard and achieved impressive results academically and in practice.

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC Local Live

Leicestershire Police said yesterday was their busiest day in four years.

In total the force dealt with 1,025 incidents. During one four-hour period the force received an average of one 999 call every minute.

    Police

The "record levels" of demand has been put down to it being Halloween and because there were several other serious incidents, including a lorry fire on the M1.

    Quote Message

The sheer volume of calls, and the many incidents which required the deployment of lots of resources, caused a real strain on the force yesterday. As result, we simply could not attend every incident as swiftly as we would have liked, and there remain incidents and issues reported to us yesterday that had to be put on hold until today."
