    RSPCA staff are trying to trace the owners of two guinea pigs that were discovered running around by the side of a road in Bakewell.

    The two females were spotted by a driver in a layby on the A619 on Friday. The charity said it's unclear if they had escaped or been abandoned.

    If no-one comes forward to claim the pair, who have been named Buttercup and Pixie by RSPCA staff, they will be rehomed.

    RSPCA inspector Mick Darling said: “Anything could have happened to this vulnerable pair who could have easily been attacked by another animal or succumbed to the cold, wintry weather.

    “If anyone knows what may have happened to them or where they’ve come from then I’d urge them to get in touch with our appeal line on 0300 123 8018.”

    Derby County have submitted plans for an extension to Pride Park Stadium.

    The club wants to build a fan zone and two restaurants on the side of the East stand, creating up to 50 jobs.

    It replaces its previous plans for a plaza stretching from the stadium to Derby Arena.

    A stretch of road in Littleover has reopened, external following a three-car crash this morning.

    Warwick Avenue's junction with Manor Road was closed after the crash at about 06:15.

    Police said two people were in hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

  5. Crackdown in 'nuisance motorbike' hotspotspublished at 10:32 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

    Life could soon get tougher for nuisance motorbike riders in Nottinghamshire because of a crackdown.

    Paddy Tipping, the county's police and crime commissioner, is offering money from his Community Safety Fund to help tackle problems caused by bikers on quad bikers and mini motos.

    Nottinghamshire Police say they regularly receive calls from areas including Newstead, Edwalton, Sherwood and Annesley.

    Anna Leivers from Annesley said: "Eight motorbikes full speed and they don't stop, they just come straight though.

    "If you are out playing on the field near here or in the gardens and you get that noise, it must be frightening for them kiddies."

    It is not yet confirmed how the money will be used to tackle the problems.

    A man from Nottinghamshire who was scammed out of £200,000 is backing a campaign to warn against fraud.

    He struck up a friendship online with a woman who supposedly lived in Ghana and needed help to secure her inheritance.

    The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, lent the money but it turned out to be part of a scamming operation.

    He said: "If that money wasn't paid by the end of 2016, they would keep the gold and the gold was worth £5m and that is when my ears pricked up.

    "I make no mistake, I was not interested in 1p of that gold, it was all down to helping these two people get their inheritance from their father."

    He is now helping Nottinghamshire Police warn others not to make the same mistake.

    Hundreds of workers at the Royal Derby Hospital have complained to the city council about the amount of time it takes them to get out of their staff car parks at peak times.

    Some staff have said they've spent two hours queueing between the three car parks behind Aldi and the roundabout.

    The council says a meeting has been arranged with hospital bosses to try to resolve the issue.

    A woman from Nottingham has criticised a hotel which said it would "turn homeless people away" at Christmas despite her offer to pay for their rooms.

    Jessica Peters wanted to gift the accommodation to rough sleepers but said Britannia Hotel told her they wouldn't be welcome.

    Jessica from Wollaton said: "I said would they still be accepted, obviously I would be using my card and my money and he said based on experience it would be declined.

    "I felt really upset, I thought especially at Christmas, you would have thought everyone would come together. I wasn't asking them to donate rooms to the homeless."

    The hotel has not responded to our request for a comment.

    Four elephants from Twycross Zoo are to move to Blackpool Zoo in the new year to breed.

    The female Asian elephants will go to a new £2.5m facility to live alongside a bull elephant, with bosses hoping the move will help to ensure the long-term survival of the endangered species.

    A burst water pipe in South Luffenham has led to disruption to water supplies for a number of homes in the Oakham area.

    The three-car crash has happened at the point where Manor Road turns into Warwick Avenue.

    One car is on its roof at the side of the road and the back of the car is completely crumpled.

    On the other side there's another car that looks like it's hit the garden wall of a house here.

    There's also a third car in the middle of the road with its front bumper completely smashed and the bonnet up.

    The fire service said it helped to free a woman from one of the cars but we're awaiting more detailed information on injuries.

    Aside from the crash in Littleover there doesn't appear to be any other major problems on roads in the East Midlands right now.

    There are major delays on a busy route into Derby following a crash involving three cars this morning.

    Police said a number of people were injured in the collision in Warwick Avenue in Littleover at about 06:15.

    Drivers have been advised to avoid the area while the clear-up continues.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds this evening.

    Strong winds with gusts of 30 to 40 mph are expected causing delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport.

    There will be outbreaks of rain, occasionally heavy, which will add to the difficult travel conditions.

    Tomorrow will be dry and bright but it will remain breezy with winds easing slightly.

    A few showers possible but for most it will be a dry day, feeling cooler, with maximum temperatures of 10C (50F).

    A man has been jailed for six years and eight months after a fatal crash in Leicester three years ago.

    Young Noel Munyanyi pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court to causing the death of his passenger Kainos Mupungu, 30, of Braunstone, by careless driving while unfit through drink.

    Kainos Mupungu was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics after the crash, which happened on Aikman Avenue in the early hours of 4 May, 2014.

    Munyanyi, 33, of no fixed abode, has also been disqualified from driving for eight years and four months.
