East Midlands MEP Rupert Matthews has criticised the European Commission for its decision not to allow cities in the UK to bid to become European Capital Culture for 2023 because of Brexit.

Five UK cities, including Nottingham, were bidding to host the title, with the winner expected to be announced next week.

Mr Matthews said he was "extremely angry" at the "unfair and unjustified decision".

He said: "Time, effort and money have all been put into this process by local individuals, businesses and public bodies, only to be wasted if this very poor decision is allowed to stand.

"Nottingham has a very strong bid and I am outraged that all the hard work will have been for nothing."

Mr Matthews said he would be "challenging this appalling decision".

Three non-EU cities have previously held the title - Istanbul in 2010, Stavanger in Norway in 2008, and Reykjavik, Iceland, in 2000.
