    Two women arrested in connection with a series of attacks on cash machines in the East Midlands have been released while investigations continue, external.

    The pair, aged 29 and 38, were detained yesterday and questioned on suspicion of offences under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

    Two men who were arrested in Warwickshire yesterday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary remain in custody in Leicestershire.

    The latest cash machine to be attacked was at a Tesco Express in Hinckley at about 01:40 yesterday.

    The Labour MP for Gedling accused chancellor Phillip Hammond of ignoring the financial struggles of local authorities in yesterday's budget.

    The tree has been covered in snow ahead of the Christmas lights switch-on this evening.

    Three cash machines at a bank in West Bridgford have had "scamming devices" placed on them.

    Nottinghamshire Police said the machines at TSB in Davies Road had been targeted on Sunday.

    Two of the machines are just inside the main forecourt area before the main doors and one is outside.

    Officers have urged customers to check any machines before withdrawing money.

    The Nottingham 2023 team has reacted to the news that the city's bid to become the European Capital of Culture appears to be over.

    The European Commission has confirmed the UK will not be able to take part in the competition due to Brexit.

    Paul Russ, chairman of the Nottingham 2023 bid, said: "Our European Capital of Culture bid has brought Nottingham together over the last few months and regardless of any outcomes we will work to implement as many of the positive actions through the city's Strategic Cultural Framework.

    "The bid team will be liaising with the DCMS over the coming days and we hope the situation can be resolved positively so that we and the other bidding cities can present next week as planned."

    A 30-year-old man has been charged with a robbery in Nottinghamshire.

    The UK will not be able to compete in the European Capital of Culture 2023 due to Brexit, the European Commission has confirmed.

    Five UK cities, including Nottingham, were bidding to host the title, with the winner expected to be announced next week.

    Nottingham, Dundee, Leeds, Milton Keynes and Belfast / Derry submitted their final bid proposals last month.

    A letter from the European Commission to the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said UK participation "would not be possible".

    It said the UK's selection process should "immediately be discontinued".

    The DCMS said it "disagreed" with the European Commission's stance and was "deeply disappointed" that the Commission had waited until the UK cities had submitted their bids before "communicating this new position to us".

    The UK government said previously that the title was "part of our plan for a dynamic, outward-looking and global Britain" post-Brexit.

    However, it had warned bidders that the contest "may be subject to the outcome of those exit negotiations".

    The charity fundraiser has been disabled from the waist down since a riding accident in 2007 but recently completed the Great North Run in a bionic suit.

    A business owner from Leicester says firms are uncertain about the future following yesterday's budget.

    Chancellor Philip Hammond has insisted the budget will address Britain's problems with productivity.

    But Saeed Khilji, a textile manufacturer, said changes in VAT and the national minimum wage in the budget have done nothing to calm their fears.

    A man has been arrested after being detained by residents who said they spotted him trying doors in Wirksworth.

    Police said the 50-year-old man was being held in the back garden of a home in Crabtree Close when he was arrested at about 20:00 yesterday.

    Congratulations to Oakwood's Isabelle Weall who picked up the Young Achiever gong at last night's Pride of Sport Awards in London, external.

    The 15-year-old overcame losing her arms and legs to meningitis when she was seven to become one of the top trampolinists in the country.

    Aside from the honour, Isabelle said one of her highlights of the evening was getting to meet stars from the reality TV show Love Island.

    RSPCA staff are trying to trace the owners of two guinea pigs that were discovered running around by the side of a road in Bakewell.

    The two females were spotted by a driver in a layby on the A619 on Friday. The charity said it's unclear if they had escaped or been abandoned.

    If no-one comes forward to claim the pair, who have been named Buttercup and Pixie by RSPCA staff, they will be rehomed.

    RSPCA inspector Mick Darling said: “Anything could have happened to this vulnerable pair who could have easily been attacked by another animal or succumbed to the cold, wintry weather.

    “If anyone knows what may have happened to them or where they’ve come from then I’d urge them to get in touch with our appeal line on 0300 123 8018.”

    Derby County have submitted plans for an extension to Pride Park Stadium.

    The club wants to build a fan zone and two restaurants on the side of the East stand, creating up to 50 jobs.

    Warwick Avenue's junction with Manor Road was closed after the crash at about 06:15.

    Life could soon get tougher for nuisance motorbike riders in Nottinghamshire because of a crackdown.

    Paddy Tipping, the county's police and crime commissioner, is offering money from his Community Safety Fund to help tackle problems caused by bikers on quad bikers and mini motos.

    Nottinghamshire Police say they regularly receive calls from areas including Newstead, Edwalton, Sherwood and Annesley.

    The area worst affected

    Anna Leivers from Annesley said: "Eight motorbikes full speed and they don't stop, they just come straight though.

    "If you are out playing on the field near here or in the gardens and you get that noise, it must be frightening for them kiddies."

    It is not yet confirmed how the money will be used to tackle the problems.
