  13. Police use of batons 'justified' by watchdogpublished at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2017

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC Local Live

The police watchdog has found Leicestershire Police used "proportionate force" when arresting a man armed with a knife outside a community centre in Leicester.

The man arrested in the Beaumont Leys area on 11 September this year needed stitches to his face after two police officers used batons to restrain him.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said he refused to put the knife down despite repeated requests, and approached one of the officers with it.

He was eventually arrested and later given a four-month jail sentence, suspended for a year.

    Quote Message

We had a duty to investigate due to the injury the man sustained, and our investigator concluded that officers faced a very real threat to their safety and acted with substantial restraint."
