    Sports Direct has called a general meeting to decide whether the brother of chief executive, Mike Ashley, should be paid £11m.

    A report by the Shirebrook firm's legal advisers and accountants said John Ashley had been paid less than other senior executives.

    Mike Ashley (pictured) said his brother deserved the money but he believed shareholders would vote against the proposal.

    Sad news about this chimp - Twycross Zoo said Danny passed away after being injured in a "challenge for position" within his chimpanzee group and was unable to recover.

    The zoo announced his death on its Facebook page, external yesterday.

    The post said: "It is with great sadness that we bring you the news that our much loved chimp Danny passed away during the night."

    A new report has suggested 250,000 jobs could be created in Derby and Nottingham if the two city councils worked more closely together.

    The Metro Dynamics report, external, jointly commissioned by the two authorities, concluded closer collaboration could attract more investment in both areas.

    That job target is double the number of people in Derby who currently work. Martin Rawson, the deputy leader of Derby City Council, said it was important to have an ambitious plan.

    He said: "We need to be making sure that as both cities we're maximising the opportunities for creating jobs and bringing in external investment.

    "We need to have challenging targets in terms of new jobs created and we are very committed in both cities to doing everything we can to increase employment opportunities.

    "Now we need to look behind the figures and spend some time understanding the work they [the consultants] have done and how they came to that figure."

    The team behind Nottingham's bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2023 has said there's still hoping to salvage something positive from their investment in the bid.

    So far £150,000 has been spent on Nottingham's bid but yesterday the European Commission ruled UK cities were no longer be eligible for the title because Britain will have left the EU by then.

    Councillors have narrowly approved outline planning permission for expansion at Magna Park in South Leicestershire.

    The distribution centre’s owner, IDI Gazeley put forward plans to the north of the current site while another developer, dbsymmetry presented a scheme to the south.

    About 150 people attended the five hour meeting last night at Bruntingthorpe Airfield.

    Concerns were raised about air and light pollution, new traffic generated and the impact of the plans on the local landscape.

    IDI Gazeley has said in a statement that its plans will deliver a significant number of jobs to the site, and that it will work with Harborough District Council to mitigate any issues.

    Protesters at the meeting said they were very disappointed by the news.
