A plane full of passengers who were delayed for more than 24 hours before take-off have landed on the wrong island.

The Jet2 plane was originally meant to take-off at 10:20 from East Midlands Airport on Sunday but it was delayed and passengers were put into a hotel overnight.

It finally took off at 14:09 but passengers arrived in Fuerteventura instead of Lanzarote last night.

Passenger James Whitfield said: "We were scheduled to land at around 18:00 in Lanzarote...looking outside was just pure cloud and fog so whether or not this caused the first aborted landing I am not sure but all of a sudden en route to landing, the plane rocketed back up into the air.

"We must have been 100ft above the runway... before we rocketed back up again in the air to the sound of screams from passengers."

James said they waited for two hours at the airport before they were all put into a hotel for the night.

He said a coach arrived at the hotel to take them back to Fuerteventura's airport this morning but added that "nobody has told them when the flight to Lanzarote" has been rescheduled for.
