Jim Creamer, the local branch secretary of the RMT union - who was at Nottingham station this morning - said: "Most of these commuters here have gone without a pay rise for four years or longer and it does mean they're having to pay increased fares but the service isn't increasing."

The government says it's spending record amounts to improve the network.

The 30-year-old, who's been detectoring for three years, said: “I have had some interesting finds before including a Bronze Age flat axe and Celtic brooch but this is the best one yet.”

The 20-carat gold ring, which is engraved with an image of St George, the patron saint of England, will be sold at Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall on 24 January.

“It is a superb example of the craftsmanship of the time. Only high-ranking figures such as bishops or nobility would have been able to afford a ring of such high quality featuring fine decorative engraving and faceting," said Adam Staples, from Hansons.

“It may well have belonged to a bishop from Beverley Minster and would have been commissioned.”
