    A "happy-go-lucky" 30-year-old died because a chip pan set his kitchen alight, external, an inquest heard.

    Ben Williams was house-sitting for a friend when he is thought to have come back from a party and started cooking chips with a chip pan on the hob.

    A 57-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a cottage fire in Ratby, police have said.

    Firefighters say half the cottage has been destroyed in the blaze, which broke out in Church Lane shortly before 04:00.

    Police say the road is likely to remain closed for most of today while investigations are carried out.

    Ratby Primary School has also opted to stay shut for the day following the blaze.

    Here's the moment Melton Mowbray's Claire Lomas completed the Manchester Marathon using a bionic suit to walk the course.

    Claire, who was paralysed in an accident in 2007, finished the 26-mile marathon in eight days to raise money for the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation.

    This cuts nine days off her previous record of 17 days for the London Marathon in 2012.

    If you've ever fancied strolling through a giant inflatable colon, you need to make a beeline to Nottingham's Old Market Square.

    The stunt has been organised by MacMillan Cancer Support to encourage people to get checked for bowel cancer.

    There's also a range of specialists on hand to answer questions about the disease as well as wig and hair loss specialists.

    Carmen Digby vanished from her home in the Newbold area on Saturday evening.

    Officers have asked anyone who knows where she is to call 101.

    Today marks the 67th anniversary of the Peak District becoming the UK's first designated national park, external.

    The scheme was devised by the government after World War Two to protect areas of natural beauty and provide more recreational opportunities for the public.

    The Peak District was quickly joined by the Lake District, Snowdonia and Dartmoor, and the designation was later extended to more areas, including the Yorkshire Dales, Brecon Beacons and Loch Lomond.

    Nottingham-based short track speed skater Elise Christie admits she expected to be "at least an Olympic medallist" at this stage of her career.

    Two months on from another agonising Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Elise concedes she is still coming to terms with her experience in South Korea.

    The triple world champion fell in the 500m final and 1500m semi-finals, and was disqualified from the 1,000m heats in Pyeongchang.

    "I was pretty sure I would at least be an Olympic medallist," she told BBC Radio 5 live.

    "I know it's not everything and I've done everything else, but it's just such a big deal is made out of the Games."

    This was the aftermath of a crash involving a VW Polo and a Mini on the A52 yesterday afternoon.

    Derbyshire Police said members of the public stopped to give first aid after the crash, which happened near Borrowash at about 15:00.

    The force's roads policing unit added there were no life-threatening or life-changing injuries, external in the collision, which led to the road being closed westbound for a short time.

  9. Four in ten East Mids grooming cases 'involved Facebook'published at 08:44 British Summer Time 17 April 2018

    Police forces in the East Midlands have disclosed that Facebook, and the apps Facebook owns, were used in more than 40% of online grooming cases reported in the region.

    An NSPCC investigation found in the first nine months since sexual communication with a child became an offence in April 2017 there were 103 incidents recorded in Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire - 42 of those involved Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram.

    The charity's calling for extra protection on children's accounts.

    Facebook has said it is already using technology to identify grooming behaviour.

  10. Man arrested on suspicion of threats to killpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 17 April 2018

    A man was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill after an incident which closed a road and forced the evacuation of a number of houses last night.

    Police were called to Yorke Drive in Newarke shortly after 19:00 following reports of a domestic incident and concerns over the safety of a man.

    The road was shut for several hours before a 30-year-old man was arrested. He remains in police custody.

  11. School closes after cottage fire in Ratbypublished at 08:04 British Summer Time 17 April 2018

    Firefighters have been dealing with a fire at a cottage in the village of Ratby, to the west of Leicester.

    It's not thought anyone has been injured in the blaze in Church Lane but Main Street has been closed between Stamford Street and Burroughs Road.

    Ratby Primary School has also shut as a result of the fire, which has been brought under control.
