    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

Almost £900,000 has been handed back to house builders by Leicestershire County Council over the last five years after the money was not spent, an FOI request has revealed.

Section 106 contributions are paid to councils by developers when planning permission is agreed and is ringfenced for certain projects.

The county council received about £42.5m of contributions in the last five years which had to be spent within a time period.

    Cycle lane

Funding for one project, a £20,000 cycle lane, had to be returned after the county council did not complete the work in the identified time period.

Councillor Simon Galton, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said the way the agreements are reached should be reviewed.

He said: "It's always disappointing when section 106 funds have to be handed back to developers when the money was justified during the planning process to mitigate the impact of the development and make it acceptable."

Councillor Nick Rushton, leader of the county council, said: "We get a big amount of section 106 money, it's hard to spend it all.

"Some of the amount we returned is to do with a prospective bus service that was not ready to go at the time."
