The aunt of Isla Tansey, who inspired people across the world to decorate and hide stones, has told the BBC the family is now "trying to process the massive loss".
Jackie Moore said Isla, who had a rare form of spinal cancer, "just went to sleep peacefully at home" in Hinckley at about 19:00 on Tuesday.
Isla had asked people to take selfies when they found the painted stones and post them on social media.
Her parents hoped the Isla Stones would create a "legacy" for their daughter.
Ms Moore said Isla was at home with her parents Katherine and Simon and 10-year-old brother Harrison when she died.
Quote MessageIsla progressively got more and more tired and less conscious. We are all together as a family and trying to process the massive loss. We are taking each day as it comes and trying to take hold of all our emotions and trying to keep strong."

It was widely known that the Foxes player was keen to move on from the club and last night that happened when he was bought by Manchester City for £60m. Leicester City signed Mahrez in 2014 for just £400,000.

After quitting as a Tory vice-chair last night, Mansfield MP Ben Bradley said people in the town "aren't daft" in understanding what Brexit should be.
He said: "I just felt as though within the party and within that role I couldn't give my honest view and if I'm not doing that, why am I here?"
He continued: "Hearing from constituents in great numbers and my own members, I didn't feel I could honestly go out and defend it."
We put this to the test in Mansfield and the message from people there seems to be - get on with it and stop squabbling!

A new leisure centre, costing up to £23m, could be built in Bingham near the current centre.
Rushcliffe Borough Council said at a meeting last night it would "explore plans" and start investigating whether the new centre can be built on land in Chapel Lane, on land owned by the council north of the railway line.
The results of this study are expected next year, and if given the go-ahead, the centre could include a sports hall, 25m swimming pool, fitness gym, exercise studios and office space.
The borough council’s deputy leader, councillor Debbie Mason, said: "The cost of building a new leisure centre is significant so we are undertaking a further study to give careful consideration not only to ensure the location of the site is correct, but also in the long term so the site can give us the sufficient financial return to make it viable."

Two men have been convicted of killing a man in Loughborough after attacking him with his own prosthetic leg.
In January, 38-year-old Mark Swinhoe and a friend went to Moira Street where to collect drugs but when they arrived they were attacked. Mr Swinhoe was kicked, stamped on, hit with his prosthetic leg and stabbed. He died from a stab wound to his chest.
A jury found Harry Matthews, who is 22 years old and from Brush Drive in the town, guilty of Mr Swinhoe''s murder. He was also found guilty of assault.
Another man, 24 year old Jamie Wileman from Elm Grove in Moira, was found guilty of Mark's manslaughter but acquitted of murder.
A third man was acquitted of both murder and manslaughter.
Quote MessageMark will be remembered as a loving and caring man. He loved his children dearly and the events of January 14 this year have deprived them of having their father in the future. The attack on Mark lasted only a few minutes but the lasting effects of his death will stay with his family for a lifetime."
