  8. Increasing parking charges coming to Derbyshirepublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Eddie Bisknell
    Local Democracy Reporter

Increased parking charges in Derbyshire Dales are due to be approved, netting the local authority an extra £214,000 a year.

Derbyshire Dales District Council announced plans in July to hike the price for parking for the first time in four years.

PictureImage source, Local Democracy Reporter Service

This will see the cost for an hour of parking rise by 20p to £1.50, two hours by 30p to £2.50; three hours by 50p to £3.80; four hours by 60p to £5 and a day by 50p to £6.

It will cost the district council £28,000 to make the necessary changes to signage and pay and display machines but it will bring the authority an extra £213,958 every year.

The proposed changes are due to be imposed on 1 January.

Five people responded to a public consultation and all were critical of the proposals.

  9. Council to discuss position on unitary changepublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Hugh Casswell
    Political reporter, BBC Radio Nottingham

Mansfield District Council is considering a motion to formally oppose plans for a unitary Nottinghamshire council.

The motion's proposer is Stewart Rickersey, a Mansfield Independent Forum councillor.

Cllr Rickersey's four party colleagues are also county councillors in a coalition with the Conservatives. They've so far kept the unitary plans alive by voting with the Conservative leader.

If this motion passes, that would put pressure on those four "dual hatted" Mansfield Independents to vote against unitary plans in the future.

The motion has also been seconded by leader of the opposition Mansfield Labour group, Sonya Ward, so expect Labour councillors to vote for it.

The men made threats to people inside the property and asked for access to a safe. One person was hit with a crowbar - he suffered minor bruising.

The men got away with a purse and a television.

    Quote Message

I believe that the offenders deliberately targeted this address in the hope of finding a safe, which is why they armed themselves. This was a horrific ordeal that occurred in the victim’s own home. I would like to speak to anyone who may have noticed anyone acting suspiciously in Station Road either last night or in the days leading up to this incident."

  12. Plan to expand size of Nottingham citypublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

A detailed plan to expand the boundaries of the city is currently being put together by Nottingham City Council.

It would involve enlarging the city's boundaries to include areas including Stapleford, Gedling, Arnold, West Bridgford and Hucknall.

The leader of the city council, Labour's Jon Collins, said it was in response to a plan being drawn up by the county council to scrap district and borough councils and create a new "super council" for Nottinghamshire.

The government would likely have the final say on whether either, or both schemes were approved. It is also possible that both would be rejected.

Simon Robinson is the leader of Conservative-run Ruschliffe Borough Council, and said the vast majority of people in West Bridgford would be against a plan. He said: "We would reject and fight any expansion of the city into Rushcliffe's boundaries.

"I'm absolutely sure the residents of Rushciffe, whether it be West Bridgford or any other area, are very proud to be part of Rushcliffe and certainly don't want to be incorporated into the city.

A dwarf wrestling event due to come to Leicester next month has been cancelled "due to the tone of promotion".

The "Extreme Dwarfanator Wrestling" show had received criticism from the Restricted Growth Association who described it as a "freak show" from the 19th Century.

Skyler Ward, the promoter for the Dwarfanators, argued they were "trying to change society for the better" to give people with dwarfism the same opportunities as everyone else.

But Morningside Arena Leicester said it was an "inclusive venue, that welcomes performers and guests from all backgrounds".

  19. Nail clippings pin burglar to crimepublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Sandish Shoker
    BBC News

A robber has been jailed for 22 years after a terrifying burglary where DNA from his victim's fingernail clippings linked him to the crime.

David Devlin, of no fixed abode, was already serving a sentence for burglary when he absconded from HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire in May 2017.

While still on the run, he broke into a house in Leicester in March this year.

Police said a woman in her 60s had been at home in Yardley Drive when Devlin and two other men broke in demanding cash and gold.

While the other men searched the house, Devlin punched and kicked her to the ground but she scratched his face while pulling at his balaclava.

He then sprayed her hands and face with cleaning fluid and clipped her fingernails - but left them at the scene.

They were then recovered by police and DNA analysis matched them to Devlin.

On the same night, Devlin and two other men broke into a house on Timble Road, Leicester, threatening a mother and her children with a screwdriver.

Thousands of pounds worth of jewellery and a camera were stolen.

Police said the other two men have not been identified.

The 27-year-old, of no fixed abode, was due to stand trial on Monday at Leicester Crown Court for charges including grievous bodily harm, robbery, handling stolen goods and aggravated burglary but changed his plea to guilty.

  20. Worms launched into space for astronaut studypublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC News

Scientists from the University of Nottingham are involved in an experiment that will see thousands of worms launched into space.

It's hoped the experiment will help to explain why astronauts experience significant muscle loss in zero-gravity during spaceflight.

The Worms in Space project is the first UK experiment to take place on the International Space Station.

Preparations to send worms into space have been taking place at Nottingham.

The worms are in liquid bacterial feed and are sealed in a special gas-permeable plastic bag.

Astronauts can lose up to 40% of their muscle after six-months in space.

This new research will try to identify the precise molecules which cause these problems and also test out new therapies to prevent the muscle loss.

It's thought the mission could have some benefits to us earthlings as well, with the potential to help find new treatments for muscular dystrophies and diabetes.
