The teachers' union Unison claims West Nottinghamshire College is facing financial collapse after being given a government financial health notice to improve.
Minutes from a board meeting show the institution in Mansfield only has 11 days of cash reserves.
Leigh Powell from Unison said: "It's a disgrace that financial troubles have escalated to this level.
"Senior managers at the college have played fast and loose with public money to the detriment of students' education, and the future of the dedicated staff who work there."
Adrian Morgan is Unison's regional organiser, he told the BBC there are three other colleges in Nottinghamshire that are also struggling financially but they're operating in a different way to West Notts College.
The college principal and chief executive strongly refute any suggestion that the institution has mismanaged public money.

A collection of vintage Star Wars toys are returning to Coalville where they were made in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The May The Toys Be With You exhibition will be displayed at the Heartwood Conference Centre, the exact site of the former Palitoy offices.
The exhibition is currently on display at New Walk museum - it attracted about 30,000 people in its first month.
Councillor Richard Blunt, the leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “As soon as we learned of Matt’s incredible collection we knew we had to bring it home to Coalville.
“Palitoy left a real legacy in this town and a lot of people have great memories of working there or had friends and family connected to the firm."
You can see the exhibition in Coalville between 2-10 November.

A butcher in Duffield has caused controversy by displaying quips outside his shop poking fun at vegans.
Wisecracks written on the A-boards outside the Anthony Andrews butchers' shop in King Street include: "Dear Vegans, we have the cow that's been eating all your grass."
The boards have had a mixed response after being highlighted on the Spotted Duffield Facebook page, external.
Valerie Bottomer wrote: "I suppose some people have to come out with these remarks to justify the suffering and abuse done to animals because they have no compassion any only care about their bellies."
However, others have defended the quips and said they were just a bit of fun.
Responding to the criticism on Facebook, external, shop owner Anthony Griffiths said: "Firstly we never try and offend anyone, especially our loyal vegan customers.
"We believe in and only deal with animals from high welfare farms. We are a certified “quality assured” butchers shop and all our animals are processed at an RSPCA-approved abattoir.
"We always try and sell with some humour behind us. Let’s face it, there is enough going on in the world to moan, be sad or appalled about so if we can make a few of you smile along the way with a silly sign then it can’t be a bad thing."

An anti-knife crime campaigner from Nottingham says she is outraged that Poundland are selling what appear to be plastic replica kitchen knives for Halloween.
Hyacinth Francis, who runs projects to help youngsters in St Ann's, said: "It looks like a real kitchen knife. For me I think it's mindless, it's thoughtless.
"For these people it's money, it's money for them but they don't understand the agony people are going through losing their youngsters to knife crime."
Poundland has said it shares concerns on knife crime and from next month it will be completely removing kitchen knives from all stores. It said this plastic knife was just a glow in the dark plastic toy for Halloween.
