    A week of hearings looking into historic child sexual abuse in Nottinghamshire will begin on Monday.

    The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse will host the hearings at Trent Bridge and will hear evidence and opening statements from witnesses.

    It's due to spend three weeks looking into the extent of any institutional failures to protect children in the care of Nottingham city and Nottinghamshire county councils from abuse and exploitation.

    The hearings in Nottingham will conclude on 5 October and the remaining two weeks of hearings will take place in London.

    A Leicestershire businessman, who stole more than £180,000 through a tax scam, has been handed a 20-month suspended sentence.

    HMRC says Mark Hammond, 50, of Blake Close, Barrow upon Soar, deliberately hid sales to evade paying VAT and Corporation Tax for two companies that traded as The Blacksmith Arms bar and restaurant.

    He pleaded guilty to fraud and cheating the public revenue on 31 August and was sentenced today.

    He stole £181,189, of which £136,236 was unpaid VAT and £44,953 was Corporation Tax.

    He was also sentenced to 180 hours of unpaid work.

    Confiscation proceedings to recover the stolen money have begun.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a pedestrian was hit by a car in Whitwell.

    Police were called to the scene of the crash, at the junction of Hennymoor Lane and the A60, at about 6:30 this morning. The man was pronounced dead soon after.

    The 62-year-old driver was arrested. Police would like to hear from anyone with dash cam footage or anyone that might have seen pedestrians in the area around the time of the crash.

    Glyn Street, the partner of Mrs Caliman's mother, said: "This individual exposed Faye to a gradual increase of abuse which resulted in her brutal, cold and intentional murder, leaving behind loved ones and most of all her three beautiful girls who will now face life without their mother.

    "Justice for Faye has been done. It won't bring her back but hopefully this will increase awareness and help to stop the increase in deaths occurring from domestic abuse"

    Nottingham Crown Court heard that Marian Caliman slapped his wife and shouted abuse at her, while filming her on his mobile phone.

    He then told her “I’m going to kill you,” before stabbing her 12 times.

    Part of the video was shown at Nottingham Crown Court today. When the police arrived they found the couple's two-year-old daughter upstairs.

    Judge John Burgess said: “There was a coldness about the way you treated her. I’m satisfied that your intention was to kill her”.

    Caliman admitted murder and was jailed for 19 years.

    A 29-year-old woman from Stoney Stanton has pleaded not guilty to murdering a prematurely born baby.

    It follows the discovery of the newborn's body in Hinckley on 30 April last year.

    Hannah Cobley made her plea at Leicester Crown Court where she was released on bail to next appear in court for a pre-trial hearing on 22 March 2019. She's then due to stand trial in May.

    A man has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 19 years for murdering his wife at their home in Nottinghamshire.

    Thirty-two-year-old Marian Caliman, also known as Mario, killed his wife Faye Caliman, who was 30, at their Bestwood home in April.

    He admitted murder at Nottingham Crown Court.

    Police have released images showing the theft of a trailer and agricultural supplies.

    It happened at about 23:45 on 7 September in the yard of Bayley's on Linton Road, Rosliston.

    CCTV images show three men loading an Ifor Williams trailer with items including a pallet of stable mats, galvanised hay racks, rolls of barbed wire and green plastic electric fence posts.

    The trailer was then driven away by a pickup truck, believed to be a Nissan Navara.

    A traveller site in a Leicestershire village has been approved by planners.

    Permission was granted for three caravan pitches and the conversion of an existing building on the land at Spinney View Farm in Claybrooke Parva.

    Harborough District Council's planning committee approved the plans at a recent meeting. They have a legal duty to provide five permanent gypsy and traveller pitches in the district.

    An existing building will be converted into a day room with kitchen and shower facilities. Residents and Claybrooke Parva Parish Council had raised concerns about extra demand on local services and the lack of a safe pedestrian route from the site into the village.

  15. Hunt for thieves after stolen car smashes into vanpublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 28 September 2018

    Police are looking for thieves who crashed a stolen car into a van in Spondon.

    The convertible Peugeot 307 was taken from a house in Sandringham Drive and hit a Toyota van parked outside the Tamarind restaurant in Chapel Street. It was later found abandoned in a nearby street.

    Anyone with information on the theft, which happened on Sunday 16 September, has been asked to contact Derbyshire Police, external.

    Leicestershire City Council has called on the government to fund repairs of roads which were damaged because of the summer heatwave.

    A total of £2.25m has been raised, some coming from rents from properties purchased by the council over the last year, but the authority say more is needed to repair all the roads affected by the problem.

    Councillor Blake Pain, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "One of the hottest summers on record has taken its toll on our roads."I hope the government respond to our calls for further funding so we can repair all the roads identified and prevent more issues from occurring in the future."

    Ilkeston Community Hospital has said bed numbers will not be reduced in a cost-cutting plan.

    Derbyshire CCG has to make savings of 3% this financial year, but in a meeting held last night it was agreed that bed numbers would not be affected.

    Maggie Throup, MP for Erewash said: "I am extremely pleased to confirm that no beds will close at Ilkeston Community Hospital as part of Derbyshire CCGs wider plans to save 3% of their budget this year.

    "Over recent months I have held intensive discussions with health ministers and NHS bosses at the CCGs regarding their budget shortfall, during which I have always made the case for Ilkeston Hospital as a strategic asset to our local NHS which must be maintained."
