The creator of two World War One-themed scarecrows that were "beheaded" by vandals says he hopes to have them back in place by the weekend.

Steve Dewis spent hours building the figures with his neighbours and their grandchildren before the display, at Mickleover's All Saint's Church, was damaged on Wednesday night.

The scarecrows of a soldier and a young girl - designed to mark 100 years since the end of WW1 - have been removed but Mr Dewis is working on getting them repaired.

Mr Dewis (pictured left) branded the vandals "disrespectful" and "idiotic" but defiantly told BBC Radio Derby: "We will rebuild our scarecrows. We will not be beaten.

"If the men of the first and second world wars had given up, we wouldn't be able to sit here and have this conversation now."
