    There's excitement among the bird watching community after a glossy Ibis was spotted at Hicks Lodge in Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

    The bird, which usually enjoys the warmer southern Europe and Africa, has been spotted at a pond on the Measham trial.

    The RSPB said it gets about 20 or 30 reports of glossy Ibis signings in the UK each year - a number that's increased over the last five years.

    It's no longer considered as rare is it once was but it is still "not particularly common".

    A spokesperson for the bird charity said it's likely the bird has come here after breeding to feast on insects and small amphibians in the marshland.

    If undisturbed it's likely to hang around for a few weeks.

    The rally has been organised to demand more funding for schools from the government.

    Nottingham and Derby have moved a step closer to securing funding for a tram link to the planned HS2 hub in Toton.

    The two cities have bid for a share of a £840m government transport fund to carry out the work. Their bid is among 10 that has now been shortlisted for approval.

    The cities' joint application also outline plans to spend the money on improving access to new housing developments.

    A bid by Leicester has also made the shortlist. The city council would like to spend the money on improving the cycleways, bus corridors and transport hubs.

    Those behind the applications will now be given £50,000 work on their bids that will be assessed on the basis of their strength and impact on improving connectivity, supporting employment and driving up productivity.

    Other areas to make the shortlist are the North East, Norwich, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Southampton, Sheffield, Stoke-on-Trent and West Yorkshire.

    A 33-year-old man died in a crash, external on the A46 in Leicestershire last night.

    Police said the driver was killed when his Volkswagen Golf was involved in a collision with a Toyota Yaris on the southbound side in Syston at about 23:40.

    The Yaris driver suffered minor injuries and the road was closed between Cossington and the Hobby Horse island for more than eight hours.

    A man has been banned from football matches for three years after admitting shouting racist remarks, external following Derby County's home game against Preston North End last month.

    Daniel Brady, 21, of Stanage Green, Derby, also hit a man during the incident at Pride Park Stadium on 25 August.

    He pleaded guilty to a racially aggravated public order offence at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court and was handed a three-year banning order and fines totalling £365.

    Firefighters in Matlock had an unusual emergency to deal with this morning - a man unable to remove a ring from his finger, external.

    Derbyshire and Fire Rescue Service said the man arrived at Matlock fire station at about 09:30 requesting urgent help after an injury caused his finger to swell up.

    After thanking officers for removing the ring, the man told them he would be heading to hospital to get the injury checked.

    Leicestershire have announced Pakistan bowler Muhammad Abbas will return to the club for the 2019 season.

    The 28-year-old, who has taken more than 50 wickets for the Foxes this summer, was also named man of the series following Pakistan's two Test matches against England.

    Head coach Paul Nixon described Abbas as a "class act" and a "brilliant role model" for younger players.

    A man who made a 170-page "paedophile manual" has been sentenced to four years in jail followed by three years on extended licence.

    Police recovered the "step-by-step guide" on sexual relationships with children when they seized Adam Rack's belonging from his home in Mansfield.

    The 24-year-old was arrested after police intercepted an attempted upload of indecent images and tracked the IP address to his house on Heathfield Way.

    Hundreds of indecent images and videos were found on Rack's laptops and phones. A 12-year-old boy was identified as a victim Rack had abused over two years when he was between the ages of eight and 10.

    Rack pleaded guilty to a number of child sex offences earlier this year and was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday.

    Complaints about noise coming from Donington Park have plummeted since new restrictions on motorsport events were brought in, a meeting has been told.

    The track, which regularly holds racing events, now has trackside noise monitors which can be checked by council officers at any time via a web link.

    There are also limits on the number of days noisy vehicles are allowed to use the track and the times of day racing can take place.

    A meeting between Donington Park bosses and council officials last night heard noise complaints to local authorities had dropped from more than 300 in 2013 to fewer than 10 in 2017.

    Melbourne councillor John Harrison commended the track's management on doing a "fantastic job".

    Derby City Council has voted to pull out of a contract to build a new waste treatment plant in Sinfin.

    The vote took place during a public meeting last night but the final decision rests with the Conservative cabinet - and all but one party member on the council abstained from the vote.

    The public meeting followed complaints from residents about unexpected smells and noises coming the plant - dubbed Sinfin incinerator - during its testing phase.

    The new facility has also failed a series of tests set out in the contract between the city council, the county council and operators RRS.

    The cabinet is due to meet in a fortnight to discuss the issue but it's understood withdrawing from the contract would be far from straightforward.

    The city council is planning to build a new library, external as part of the regeneration of Nottingham's Broadmarsh area after a consultation found "overwhelming" public support for the idea.

    The move would see the existing central library at Angel Row sold off and a new library built at an estimated cost of £3m.

    The authority said planning permission was being sought for the move ahead of a formal decision as it would involve changes to the plans for the new Broadmarsh car park and bus station.

    Leader Jon Collins said: "“The consultation was pretty clear - people like the idea of a new Central Library that we can design and build from scratch to best suit the city’s and our children’s needs for the future.
