  16. Escaped Wollaton Park stag 'had to be shot'published at 17:07 British Summer Time 22 October 2018

    BBC News Online

Some sad news we've just heard - a stag which escaped from Wollaton Park last night had to be shot.

Nigel Hawkins, head of culture and libraries at Nottingham City Council, said shooting a deer was an "absolute last resort".

“An adult stag is a large, wild animal weighing close to 30 stone. This one was in an agitated state and moving through a heavily-populated residential area, close to a busy road and the Queen’s Medical Centre. There would have been very serious consequences if it had charged at a person.

“It’s extremely sad that the situation had to end this way. The decision taken by the emergency vet was made only when all other options had been exhausted."

He added that tranquilising the stag was ruled out because it would have taken too long for the drug to work and the animal may have bolted in a residential area.

Staff are now ensuring all exits to the park are secure and investigating how the animal escaped.
