    A last minute Christmas food shop turned into a mission lasting more than an hour for hundreds of customers at bakeries across Derbyshire this morning.

    There were long queues at Birds branches, with people waiting more than an hour and half in Oakwood to grab their festive grub in what has become an East Midlands tradition.

    At the Park Farm branch 60 people were queuing at 06:00 - with the number reaching 200 at one point.

    And this was the queue at the Allestree branch at 09:30.

    "It's become a bit of a tradition for people to grab a pork pie or mince pie at Christmas and they want it as fresh as possible," said Mike Holding, head of retail at Birds.

    He said across all their stores today they expected to make and sell 55,000 mince pies and 25,000 pork pies, as well as 100,000 bags of bread rolls.

    A van and a Peugeot crashed on the A38 this morning, where a person had to be cut free from the car.

    Police said there were no injuries in the crash near Little Eaton.

    A Derby fan who was abused while wearing the club's shirt in Nottingham was special guest of the club for Saturday's clash against Bristol City.

    Charlie Harrison, 23, was invited into the home side's dressing room to meet his Derby heroes following the 1-1 draw at Pride Park.

    Assistant manager Jody Morris tweeted: "Always be proud to wear the Rams shirt, whatever city you're in."
