The East Midlands children's heart surgery unit is on track to move to its new base at the Leicester Royal Infirmary next year.
With threats of closure, pressure has been on the current unit in Glenfield to increase the amount of procedures they carried out - something that they have been able to do.
Last year they carried out 363 operations and this year they're on course to do 382. This means the Leicester unit is no longer the smallest in the country.
Professor Frances Bu'lock said: "A lot of cardiac patients have other complex needs and that sometimes means we have to manage the cardiac bit up at Glenfield then move them down to the Leicester Royal Infirmary for the ongoing management of, say, their respiratory problems.
"Having them all together will make that more attractive for centres that don't currently refer to us."

Claude Puel seems unsure his Leicester City side will be able to match up to their opponents this weekend.
The Foxes play Tottenham at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
Speaking to the media earlier Puel said: "They have a fantastic squad with a lot of options.
"I don’t know if we can arrive at this level but of course we want to continue to develop our players like other big teams."
He complemented the opportunities Spurs gave their young players saying the club sets a good example for developing talent.
