The man accused of the manslaughter of a 100-year-old who died after her handbag was snatched said he picked up the bag on his way to meet his heroin dealer and never saw the woman.
Artur Waszkiewicz, 40, from Wolfa Street, is on trial at Derby Crown Court - he denies robbery and manslaughter.
The court has heard that Sofija Kaczan suffered injuries including a fractured neck as her handbag was snatched in May last year, near her home on Empress Road, Derby.
Today he told the jury he was driving his Seat Leon, seen on CCTV in Empress Road at the time Sofija Kaczan was injured.
Asked by his defence counsel, David Nathan QC, where he was going on that morning, Mr Waszkiewicz said he had gone out to buy heroin.
On the way he said he saw the green handbag, picked it up and drove off. He said that, as there was no money inside, he left it on a nearby street.
Under questioning he denied meeting, seeing, robbing or being responsible for the death of Mrs Kaczan.
The trial continues next week.

He’s the grandson of an SS officer and she’s the daughter of holocaust survivors - their family histories couldn't be much further apart.
Despite their differences, Neomie Lopian and Derek Niemann have come together to talk to students at the University of Derby about the relevance of the holocaust today.
Derek only found out about his grandfather's history seven years ago, when he discovered he was a Nazi war criminal.
Neomie said her Polish father only told her happy stories from his past and her mother kept her family history very secret.
After discovering the truth, the pair met on Facebook and now talk to young people about how the past is still affecting the present, discussing issues like radicalisation and extremism.
Mr Niemann said: "We're looking to encourage young people to think about the issues that we raise linked to the holocaust, linked to genocide"
He thinks his grandfather would be "appalled" by what he's doing but he said "I don't care".
Ms Lopian said the pair had nothing to do with the atrocities that happened 70 years ago but she has "major" concerns about the world now and hopes they can use their stories to make a difference.
She said: "I think if we're not proactive today we can't sit on our laurels and say 'never again'. It could be again."
