    The M1 northbound has reopened between junctions 20 and 21 in Leicestershire after being closed since the early hours of this morning.

    Two lorries caught fire following a crash which caused the road to close while the blaze was extinguished, the vehicles recovered and resurfacing work was carried out.

    Over 200m of all three lanes have been resurfaced to repair the damage caused by the fire.

    All lanes are now running but delays are expected to take some time to clear.

    A burglar who murdered an 87-year-old man has been jailed for a at least 33 years.

    Jason Wilsher, from Barlestone Road in Bagworth, broke into the Arthur Gumbley's bungalow in Little Aston in November 2017.

    Police said the pensioner was attacked while his home was "ransacked" for gold and silver jewellery.

    Mr Gumbley, who was punched, kicked and dragged across the floor, died three weeks later in hospital.

    Wilsher denied murder but was found guilty at Stafford Crown Court yesterday. The 20-year-old was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery.

    Sentencing him, Judge Michael Chambers QC said: “To target the elderly is truly wicked. This was the senseless murder of an 87-year-old man.”

    Mr Gumbley’s family have thanked Staffordshire Police for the investigation.

    They said: “We now have justice for the murder of our dad and we can move forward with our lives. Thank you to everyone.”

    The 48-year-old was in an organised cycling event when he was hit by Christopher Gard's van in Hampshire in 2015.

    In 2017 he was jailed for nine years for causing death by dangerous driving.

    Ten people have been arrested by police targeting drug misuse, crime and anti-social behaviour in the High Peak area of Derbyshire.

    A closure order was also issued at a flat in Buxton because of concerns around criminal behaviour and disorder.

    Four men were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences, one man on suspicion of shoplifting, two men on suspicion of drugs offences and one woman on suspicion of theft.

    Two other men were also arrested for failing to appear at court for a robbery offence.

    Police investigating "loud bangs" in Balderton have arrested a man and a woman on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause criminal damage.

    The drivers of two lorries which caught fire after a crash this morning escaped with minor injuries.

    The M1 northbound remains closed between junctions 20 and 21 following the blaze, which started at about 01:00 this morning.

    Diversions have been put in place from junction 20 and delays are expected on approach.

    Recovery vehicles have been at the scene and work is ongoing to resurface the road.

    Highways England expect to have one lane open by early afternoon.

    Two brothers have been convicted of sexually abusing a girl for several years in the 1970s.

    Peter MacKenzie, 57, and John MacKenzie, 60, abused their victim in Leicester when she was a child until she was about 14 years old, police said.

    At the city's crown court yesterday, Peter MacKenzie, of Borve, Isle of Lewis, was found guilty of five counts of rape, six counts of indecent assault, six counts of indecency with a child and one count of causing ABH.

    His brother, John MacKenzie, of Pondthorpe, Coventry, was found guilty of three counts of rape, six counts of indecency with a child and two counts of indecent assault.

    Det Con Anna Blockley, the investigating officer, said: "Peter and John MacKenzie almost worked in partnership when carrying out their abuse, which has had a substantial impact on the victim.

    "She has shown great courage in speaking to police about what happened, which has resulted in the brothers being brought to justice."

    The pair have been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 29 April at Leicester Crown Court.

    Police are urging people in rural communities to remain vigilant following a spate of lead thefts from church roofs.

    A number of churches in around the Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire border have been targeted this month, causing damage running into thousands of pounds.

    A man from Leicester, whose cousin was killed in the New Zealand mosque shootings a week ago, has thanked the community for its support.

    Suhail Dadabhai's cousin Junaid Ismail was one of 50 victims of the attacks in Christchurch.

    He was particularly moved by a vigil in Leicester last weekend, which hundreds of people attended.

    Mr Dadabhai said: "They said we stand with you as Muslims, as a family and we will protect you in these times and we will hold your hand and support you the whole way.

    "That in itself is the greatest thing you can ask for in a community."
