    A team of Leicestershire firefighters are preparing to cycle 200 miles in memory of a colleague who died while on duty in 2016.

    The 14 firefighters will travel from Tynemouth in Tyne and Wear to Prestwick in Scotland in the Chase the Sun challenge.

    Before his death, Paul Wilkens suggested the event to his colleagues in the cycling club but sadly he never got to take part.

    The 47-year-old was found dead while on duty at a fire station in what Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service called a "sudden and tragic loss".

    The Chase the Sun challenge is now a "tradition" for the cycling club as a way of remembering Paul and raising money for charity.

    Emergency services are dealing with a house fire in Burbage.

    Firefighters were called to the blaze on Lutterworth Road just before 13:30 - on arrival crews confirmed a property was "fully involved in fire".

    Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has said all people are accounted for. Police are also at the scene and have closed the road.

    Two men found guilty of trying to get into Islamic State-controlled Syria to commit terrorist acts have been jailed for 14 years.

    Hanzalah Patel, 23 and Safwaan Mansur, 23, were arrested at an Istanbul hotel in June 2017 after contacting a US agent posing as an IS sympathiser.

    The pair, who denied preparation of terrorist acts, claimed the talk was just "thoughts and banter".

    Patel, from Leicester, and Mansur, from Birmingham, were given 14 years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court.

    They were also sentenced to 12 months on extended licence.

    A driver was freed from a lorry after a crash on the A38 northbound this morning.

    Two lorries were involved in the collision near Somercotes at 11:05 and clean-up and recovery work is currently under way.

    One of the drivers has been taken to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre but there are not believed to be any serious injuries.

    Heavy traffic is expected in the area, with queues stretching back past the A610 junction.

    A man has been arrested after another man was knocked unconscious in Gringley on the Hill this weekend.

    A 34-year-old man was punched in the head in Laycock Avenue at about 00:40 on Saturday.

    He remains in hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-altering, police said.

    The man arrested, 39, has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

    A bag of military campaign medals has been left on a bus between Derby and Nottingham.

    The Royal British Legion bag was left on the YourBus Y5 service in Chaddesden on Wednesday 17 April.

    A man was later seen leaving the bus in Attenborough carrying a similar bag but the medals have not yet been handed in.

    There are seven medals missing including at least two WWII stars and two Korea Medals. They're believed to be replacements and might not have the owner's service details on them.

    Derbyshire Police would like to speak to the man seen in this picture.

    This was the moment a temporary, steel bridge was put into place over the B5056 near Brassington.

    The original bridge was demolished after it was hit by a lorry last month.

    The absence of a bridge has caused disruption to the High Peak Trail but it is due to reopen by the weekend.

    Derbyshire County Council has said plans to rebuild a permanent bridge are being drawn up.

    A church and community centre in Fritchley has officially reopened after being closed for more than a year.

    It had to shut due to dwindling congregation numbers - this also meant the village hall was out of action.

    Local people have rallied around to get Fritchley Congregational Church back up and running again and now have a year to prove it's being used.

    Ian Chinn was one of those who helped get the church open again - he said: "We're going to take more care of the church and the hall in the village because everyone had an assumption that it was booming along happily with no risk.

    "People find other things to do on a Sunday - watch the football or stay in bed a bit longer. So one of the first things we've done is the service won't be in the morning anymore. They'll be at 14:30 in the afternoon."

    Police have said the man lost control and hit two trees "at a ridiculous speed".

    He fled the scene leaving his female passenger trapped in the car - fortunately she only had minor injuries.

    Nottingham has been selected to host one of the UK's first-ever parcel postboxes.

    Royal Mail said it will install 1,400 of the boxes areound the country over a six-month period starting in August.

    Customers will be able to post parcels in the same way that they currently post a letter, provided that postage has been pre-paid using Royal Mail's own online labelling service.

    Existing letter postboxes were introduced in the 1850s and Royal Mail said the new move represented the first major change in the system since then.

    Nottinghamshire are making cricket history on the Isle of Wight.

    They are playing Hampshire in the County Championship returning first class cricket to the island for the first time since 1962.

    A man has suffered a fractured cheekbone and dislocated jaw after being hit with a bottle in Newark.

    Police said the serious assault happened outside The Barge pub, in The Wharf, at about 18:15 last Monday.

    A 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm but police have said they want to speak to a second man about what happened.

    They are appealing for anyone with information about what happened to come forward.

    More than 150 cyclists rode out to show support for a proposed cycle route between Derby and Baslow at the weekend.

    Campaigners are calling on Derbyshire County Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership to support their bid for the off-road pathway which would cost an estimated £10m.

    Derek Latham, from the Derwent Valley Trust, said: "What we want next is to get the feasibility study to be able to design it in detail and agree it with the owners.

    "Then we're in a very clear position to make a bid to government for the money and we will better know then how much it's going to cost exactly."
