    Police have issued a warning after stopping six boys who had forced their way into a quarry to go swimming.

    Police in Market Bosworth said the group had got through fencing at Hill Hole quarry in Markfield.

    Posting on Facebook, they said: "They were just about to jump in when we got there - they had clambered right to the bottom.

    "We aren't the fun police - but if spoiling your 'fun' means saving your life - then take the advice on board."

    It comes as emergency services across the East Midlands are warning of the dangers of open water swimming.

    Insp Lauren Woods, of Derbyshire Police, said: "When the weather is warm, it is tempting to jump in to cool off, but this can endanger your life and the lives of others if they then enter the water to help you."

    A cyclist in his 40s has been taken to hospital after colliding with a vehicle on a busy Nottingham road.

    Oxclose Lane in Arnold was closed at about 12:30 after the crash at the junction with Edwards Lane.

    The nature and severity of the cyclist's injuries have not yet been confirmed.

    Former City of Derby swimmer Adam Peaty clinched his seventh World Championship gold medal as he retained his men's 50m breaststroke title in South Korea.

    Two people have been arrested after crashing during a police chase in Nottingham.

    A 21-year-old man and 22-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after crashing in Woodborough Road, Mapperley, at about 23:00.

    The man was also arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive through alcohol or drugs.

    They were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries and remain in police custody.

    A lightning strike on a tree at a Nottinghamshire manor left it looking like a bomb had hit it, the owner said.

    Kelham Hall itself was also hit, knocking out the electrical systems at the Victorian stately home.

    The tree, which owner Jonathan Pass said was the tallest on the estate, was "blown apart" by the strike at about 02:30.

    One nearby camper said the impact shook the ground - and that he had "never packed up so quickly in my life".

    Staff at Notts County have been told a takeover of the club will not go through this week.

    It is also unlikely the club's employees will be paid on Friday.

    The club are due in the High Court for a fourth time on 31 July over an unpaid tax bill, facing administration or possibly liquidation.

    An 12-year-old boy has been transferred to a youth offender panel after he went on a "rampage of offending" in The Meadows in May.

    The boy previously pleaded guilty to 10 offences, which include racially-aggravated assault, possession of a knife, theft, robbery and criminal damage.

    A court had heard heard his mother had "done everything".

    "He's academically low and struggling so that's why he doesn't go to school, and then he's got the whole day which is where he's getting bored," she said.

    At a previous hearing, Judge Tim Spruce said the boy was "right at the beginning of his criminal career" and needed to be helped before his offending worsened.

    He had asked for a psychological report which he said could "prevent a further court sentence and identify a range of issues which maybe underlying [his] offending".

    On 10 July, at Nottingham Magistrates' Court, the boy was handed a 10-month contract with a youth offender panel and was fined £200.

    Two men have been arrested after a police chase following a burglary at a Post Office in Nottinghamshire.

    Officers were alerted to the break-in at Oxton, where the till was taken, in the early hours of this morning.

    Nottinghamshire Police said the men then drove off in a car.

    A stinger device was used to stop a vehicle in Georges Lane, Calverton, soon after.

    The men, aged 44 and 35, are being questioned on suspicion of commercial burglary.

    A truck driver is set to lose his licence after being caught using his phone twice in one day, police said.

    He was first spotted using it yesterday on the northbound side of the A38 in Derbyshire at 08:30.

    Despite being stopped by officers using an unmarked lorry, he had to be stopped again for the same offence on the same road on the southbound side at 14:00.

    Police said each offence cost him six points on his licence, meaning he will now be dealt with by the courts.

    Drivers can be banned, external if they get 12 or more points on their licence within three years.

  13. Teens charged after taxi driver 'robbed at knifepoint'published at 10:37 British Summer Time 24 July 2019

    Two teenagers have been charged after a taxi driver was allegedly robbed at knifepoint in Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

    Nottinghamshire Police said the taxi driver was pulled out of his vehicle in St Andrews Street at 06:30 yesterday before it was driven off. The vehicle was recovered nearby.

    The boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested and charged with robbery, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

    They are due to appear at Mansfield Magistrates' Court today.

    A driver has been left shaken after youths throwing rocks at the M1 smashed their windscreen just above the steering wheel.

    Police said if it had gone through, it could have been deadly.
