  11. Protest outside primary school over sex education lessonspublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 22 July 2019

    BBC Radio Nottingham

A protest against the teaching of LGBT issues as part of sex education lessons in schools was met by a counter-demonstration this morning.

About a dozen people gathered outside Fernwood Primary School in Wollaton today and were met by children and parents holding rainbow flags.

The protest follows a shake up of sex education in schools, which would see the inclusion of topics involving same sex relationships and other LGBT issues in compulsory lessons.

The organisers have said they are not homophobic and that they are concerned about children being "sexualised".

One of the organisers, Ayaz Ahmed, said: "It’s any form of sexualisation, there are always parents who will disagree with that and everyone is entitled to have an opinion."

Councillor David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council, said: "Nottingham is a diverse city that celebrates equality, inclusivity and respect – we are proud of that fact.

"It appeared that the protesters this morning had no direct link with Fernwood, but parents from the school who support the teaching of Relationships and Sex Education held a counter protest which was twice the size."

Evha Jannath, from Leicester, fell from the Splash Canyon ride at Drayton Manor, near Tamworth, Staffordshire, on 9 May 2017.

A week-long jury inquest is due to be held in Stafford on 4 November, after Staffordshire Police decided the death didn't meet the threshold for gross negligence or corporate manslaughter.

They handed the investigation over to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Today, at a pre-inquest review hearing, the HSE said it had yet to decide whether or not to bring criminal charges over the case, but the court heard any decision would not affect the inquest.
