Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has spent £2m on sourcing local produce for patient meals, a sustainable food charity has said.

The Soil Association said it has been working with the trust - which serves 8,000 meals a day - to improve its food offering through its Food For Life programme.

The news comes after the government announced a review into hospital food as a result of the recent listeria outbreak, after six hospital patients died from eating pre-packaged sandwiches and salads.

Bake Off judge Prue Leith is the latest celebrity chef to be recruited in the quest to improve the food hospital patients eat.

Policy officer Rob Percival said: "We’ve worked with Nottingham University Hospitals, they’re serving around 8,000 meals a day and in the course of a year working with us they channelled £2m spend into local ingredients, so 80% of their ingredients were sourced locally, creating jobs.

"These ingredients were of higher quality, 15% of them were organic.

"And they were freshly preparing their meals and doing it on site without exceeding the average spend on hospital meals across the NHS."

When Janet Adams was stuck in hospital and too unwell to go to her daughter's wedding - the wedding came to her.

Nurses at Nottingham City Hospital arranged for the hospital's chaplain to carry out a blessing after the official ceremony earlier this month, as well as decorating the ward and creating a makeshift aisle.

Mrs Adams has been in hospital for two months with cardiac and respiratory failure and was said to be "heartbroken" when she realised she would miss the wedding.

Having married earlier in the day, bride and groom Sarah and James West headed to the hospital ward for a second ceremony.

Staff nurse Rachel Newton said Mrs Adams, who wore the outfit she had bought for the big day, was "overwhelmed" by the gesture.

"The feedback was that the blessing on the ward was more emotional and better than their actual wedding. They are so thankful," she added.
