Plans to build a children's hospital in Leicester are a step closer after their appeal received a generous £1m donation.

It came from long-standing charity Leicester and County Convalescent Homes Society, which was started in 1903 by a group of industrialists to provide hospital beds for their workers.

Gill Aires, from the charity, said the plans for the hospital at the Leicester Royal Infirmary took them back to "where we started".

“The scale of this gift is truly humbling," she said.

The money will go towards the £7.5m the hospital needs to complete the first phase of the Children's Hospital project - relocating all of their children's heart services to Leicester Royal Infirmary.
