Tonnes of household rubbish fly-tipped in the middle of a road has led to an appeal from a Leicestershire council.

Waste - including carpet, rubble, and plastic bottles - was left in two huge piles in Watery Gate Lane, Earl Shilton, late on Friday evening.

Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council believes a large vehicle would have visited the site twice, adding one of the mounds had been set on fire.

The road has been closed for weeks due to flooding in the area.

Anyone with any information has been urged to contact the authority's clean neighbourhoods team.

  7. Stapleford football pitch vandalism 'mindless'published at 10:55 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2020

    Neil Heath
    BBC News Online

Two motorcyclists have vandalised a community football pitch that was already badly damaged by flooding.

Hickings Lane Recreation Ground, used by Stapleford Town Football Club, was churned up by the bikers on Monday evening.

Pete Scott, the club's chairman, described the vandalism as "mindless".

"We are already struggling due to the weather. The pitches are sodden and there's a lot of standing water," he said.

"It will repair but given what we're up against we don't want extra challenges."

Players have been using alternative pitches while the ground dries out.

Stapleford Town councillor Richard MacRae, who was sent the pictures by a local resident, said: "It has been hard enough for the football team to use the pitch because of the weather and now this happens.

"A small minority of people ruin it for the many, it also gives motorbike riders a bad name, again it's a small few ruining it for the many."

He has encouraged anyone with information about what happened to get in touch with Nottinghamshire Police.

  17. Bennerley Viaduct walkway could open by 2021published at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2020

    Eddie Bisknell
    Local Democracy Reporter

Construction work to reopen Bennerley Viaduct as a public walkway is to begin next week and due to be finished by the end of the year.

The 1,410ft (430m) Bennerley Viaduct - on the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border - is the only UK location on the 2020 World Monuments Watch.

The Grade II listed structure was built in 1877 over the River Erewash, near Cotmanhay.

It has been derelict for nearly 50 years but last year plans from Railway Pathways Ltd, backed by the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct group, to reopen the structure were approved.

Erewash borough councillors hailed the structure as "Cotmanhay's Eiffel Tower".

Volunteers have been clearing the site to make way for a winding path up to the top of the viaduct, ahead of a 200m ramp being installed and inset into the hillside.

This will enable cyclists, wheelchair users and those pushing prams to access the structure which would become a public walkway by the end of the year.

The cost of the project is £1.4m and much of that has already been raised.
