A house fire in Mansfield that killed a 76-year-old man was caused by an electrical extension cable or an item plugged into it.
The fire started in the lounge of the one bedroom bungalow on Chadburn Road on 15 December 2019.
Neighbours heard the smoke alarm and managed to get Michael Colin Edward Chapman out of the property.
He was taken to hospital but died two weeks later as a result of smoke inhalation.
At an inquest on Wednesday, a coroner ruled his death was accidental.
Fire investigator Tom Clark told the court: “There were various items filling the floor space, and a four-gang electrical extension lead with multiple items plugged into it was within the seat of the fire.
"Our investigation concluded that the cause of the fire was accidental and was due to either the extension lead, or one of the items plugged into it.”
Mr Chapman was described as living a "chaotic lifestyle" in terms of storage and the number of items cluttering the lounge at the time of the fire.
Assistant coroner Jonathan Straw said "clutter" like this can fuel a fire as well as make access difficult.
