A child's piggy bank, which contained more than £1,500 for his future, is one of several items that have been stolen from a family home in Leicester.
Mohammad Ali, a lawyer in the city, told the BBC he left his home on Evington Drive at 11:00 on Friday to go to work.
His wife and son also went out later that afternoon, leaving a small upstairs window open.
When the family returned at about 21:30 they found their home had been ransacked.
Mr Ali said: "Once inside, we found the back garden door open."
He said gold jewellery, thought to be worth about £10,000, cash, important documents and the piggy bank had all been taken.
"We were saving £1,500 and more for his future," he said.
Mr Ali suspects intruders used the open window to get inside.
He said his family was feeling "very insecure at the moment" and they don't have insurance to replace the stolen items.
Leicestershire Police said detectives are investigating a report of burglary at the address and had asked for anyone with information to call the force.
