A young badger is recovering after travelling for 20 miles underneath a car.

Children's nurse Adele Frost had spotted the badger under her car at her home in Heage, Derbyshire, on 11 April and assumed he had run off.

The following day she drove to work at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham and when she returned to her car at the end of the day, she heard a thud and spotted the same badger running near her car.

She said: "I instinctively knew it was the same badger and he must have somehow got in the undercarriage and stayed there.

“I just felt disbelief really. He must have been hanging on for dear life while I made the journey to work."

The RSPCA collected the badger, who had suffered an injured ear, cuts to his leg and other bumps and scrapes.

Inspector Teresa Potter said: "I actually can’t quite believe that he travelled such a long way. He’s very lucky to have survived."

The charity said the young badger was recovering well and it was hoping to release him back to the wild "in the next week or so".

  3. Firefighters tackle third moorland fire in recent weekspublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 23 April 2021

Firefighters were called to a blaze on moorland in Derbyshire last night - the third similar fire in the last three weeks.

Crews were called to Hollybank Quarry near Tintwistle at about 21:20 and worked with the landowner and RSPB to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters returned today to reinspect the site and found a broken beer bottle that suggested people may have been at the scene of the fire, they said.

Derbyshire's wild fire officer, Steve Wells, said: "Over the last three weeks firefighters have responded to three other fires in the same area, all starting in the evening after sunset.

"Whether this was a deliberate act or reckless accidental fire, the outcome is the same. Moorland fires have a huge impact on the finely balanced eco-system of our countryside, killing vital natural habitat and wildlife.

"Moorland fires also tie up vital emergency service resources that could cause a delay in responding to emergencies in other areas of the county, so we really do need people to consider their actions when out enjoying the countryside."

Amanda Sullivan, interim executive at the two trusts, said: "It’s a tremendous psychological boost for those people working in our hospitals, to see the results of the vaccination programme, the reduction in rates and the impact of the lockdown coming to fruition.

"Seeing the benefits of all that with far fewer people coming into hospital is a tremedous boost for those staff."

Since the start of the pandemic there have been 1,713 Covid deaths in Nottinghamshire.

A man has been arrested after four sheep were found dead at a Nottinghamshire farm.

Police said armed response officers were deployed to Hoe Hill Woods, in Cropwell Bishop, at about 11:00 on Thursday after a report a man was seen shooting birds with a crossbow.

The man was located and the crossbow was recovered, officers said.

While officers were with the man, a report was made of sheep being found dead at a farm in Kinoulton.

Some of the animals had injuries which "could be consistent with something similar to crossbow bolts".

A man was arrested in connection with possession of the weapon and the dead animals, Nottinghamshire Police said.

  20. Air ambulance cash raised after man's 'incredible' recoverypublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 22 April 2021

    Greig Watson
    Reporter, BBC News Online

The family of a Leicestershire man, who nearly died after a heart attack, have raised more than £2,000 for the air ambulance they credit with his survival.

Mick Bishop fell ill in Coalville town centre in January 2019 and was taken to Glenfield Hospital.

Placed in an induced coma, the 72-year-old did not initially respond to treatment and his family were told to prepare for the worst.

But after two days Mr Bishop - dubbed “Miracle Mick” by doctors - began to move and then opened his eyes.

His daughter Catherine Bishop said: "There must have been an almost undetectable level of cardiac output which meant oxygen was still getting to dad's brain - even though all the readings indicated he was effectively brain dead.

"We believe that having the air ambulance bring the critical care team to treat dad at the scene must have played a huge part in his incredible outcome."

They have raised £2,200 for Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance, via events including a raffle, and paid for a defibrillator to be installed in Coalville town centre.
