A man who kicked and threw his dog over a fence has been banned from owning or caring for animals for life.

Paul Boath, 53, of Willoughby Court, Mansfield, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

The RSPCA said witnesses saw Boath kick his King Charles spaniel Milly and throw her over a fence outside his house in October 2019.

RSPCA inspector Rachel Leafe said he then failed to seek veterinary attention for Milly's pain for more than a week. When the dog was finally taken to the vet, X-rays showed she had suffered several rib fractures.

The dog eventually suffered heart failure and was put down by vets.

As well as being banned from owning or caring for animals, Boath was sentenced to 26 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to undertake 10 days of rehab for drinking issues.

He was also ordered to pay £750 costs and a £122 victim surcharge.

    BBC Radio Derby

BBC Radio Derby has been given a sneak peek inside Derby's new Museum of Making which opens next week.

The new £18m attraction explores 300 years of Derbyshire’s manufacturing history and aims to inspire a new generation of engineers to tackle issues that face the world, now and in the future.

Executive director, Tony Butler, said: "The museum encapsulates the spirit of thinking, feeling and doing, so yes you come to learn and look at the marvellous array of objects here, but you will be able to get hands-on and really enjoy that feeling of making and doing practical things on site too."

    Derby Museum of Making

The museum opens on 21 May and will be free but due to Covid restrictions, visitors will need to book a time slot in advance.

It is housed in the old Silk Mill - regarded as the site of the world‏’‏s first modern factory - which has been extended and undergone a refurbishment.

Local manufacturer Rolls-Royce has been involved in the project and Jill Fennell, from their community investment team, said they will be running a number of educational programmes for schools, families and adults.

"We are very proud of our roots in Derby and this is a real special moment," she said.

"It's a fantastic investment and couldn't have come at a better time, so we are very excited to be part of something that will be here for the people of Derby and will develop Derby skills for the future."

  9. Covid: Harborough rate rise linked to 16th birthday partypublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 12 May 2021

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

Health bosses believe a 16th birthday party contributed to a rise in the coronavirus infection rate in Harborough.

Latest data shows the rate per 100,000 people in the week up to 7 May in Harborough is 43.7, up from 18.1 in the previous weekly period.

It means Harborough has the 19th highest rate in England.

Mike Sandys, Leicestershire's director of public health, said the event was partly behind an outbreak of cases at the childrens' school.

It is not clear whether the party breached Covid restrictions.

"It seems to be the 10 to 19-year-old age group that's been most affected and we do know there's a specific link to a school outbreak which is, in part, a consequence of a 16th birthday party held some time ago," he said.

"We don't know for certain if the event itself was in breach of the rules in place at the time, but it was certainly inadvisable.

"Harborough, like other areas across the county, has been performing brilliantly over the past few weeks, but we've seen a significant spike which has pushed the district into the top 20 nationally."

This clashes with the French Open, which has been put back a week due to the pandemic.

If any player is still involved at Roland Garros they will be forced to withdraw from the Nottingham Open.

Tournament director Rebecca James said: "Even though all our events will look different this year, we are delighted to be bringing world class tennis back to Nottingham and are looking forward to starting the 2021 grass court season with a bang."

The tournament is expected to operate at 25% capacity for spectators, with free tickets available for key workers.

  11. Teachers strike over staffing changespublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 12 May 2021

Staff at Nottingham Academy have been striking outside the school over "‘substantial and disruptive changes".

The National Education Union (NEU) in the East Midlands said the socially-distanced picket line in Sneinton on Tuesday attracted support from 70 staff members, parents and pupils.

It comes after Greenwood Academies Trust, which runs the school, announced plans for a second re-organisation of the school in under two years.

The union said staff were being forced to apply for their own jobs and compete against colleagues.

Sheena Wheatley, from Nottingham NEU, said: “This is a huge distraction from providing a quality education and staff believe that it endangers the consistency and stability this school and community needs."

A spokesperson for the trust said "positive structural changes" were being implemented as part of the academy’s "wider strategy to best support pupils".

This included an increase in specialist pastoral care, enhanced support for pupils’ mental health and curriculum improvements.

The spokesperson said: "The NEU supports these changes but believes they should not be implemented until the coronavirus pandemic has been resolved.

"However, with no guaranteed dates provided by the government’s Covid-19 recovery roadmap, and with our commitment to providing our pupils with the very best education possible, we must do everything we can to help them reconnect with their learning and move beyond the challenges of the pandemic in the new school year."

They added no jobs were at risk and staff salaries were protected.
